For intimate family drama, start with The Twilight Samurai; for a long, ensemble sword-fight epic, choose 13 Assassins. This ranked list spans both, along with animated, manga-based, Hollywood and genre-bending films. Its order follows one critic’s selection, not a settled consensus.
What counts as a samurai movie?
Samurai films, often called chanbara, are commonly treated as a strand of jidaigeki, or Japanese period drama. Their central characters are often samurai or rōnin, and sword fighting is a frequent feature. Those are useful guideposts, not an exclusive rule: films can qualify while focusing more on family life, politics or moral conflict than on combat. One curated list, for example, requires a runtime over 40 minutes and a festival, theatrical or professional streaming release, while excluding television films and series. Letterboxd’s official samurai-movie list sets out those criteria.
