Its “hottest” label is an editorial judgment—not a measured ranking or audience poll—and the stories show why these romances endure: forbidden love, class divides, betrayal, mistaken identity, and personal change.
What “hottest” means in this list
The selection below follows People en Español’s dated gallery, which does not provide scores or criteria for ranking the couples. “Hottest” is best read as romantic appeal and on-screen chemistry, not an objective measure of popularity. Univision later singled out the chemistry of Edith González and Eduardo Palomo in Corazón salvaje and described Angélica Aragón and Ari Telch as a favorite pairing, but those retrospectives do not turn the 2009 gallery into a poll.

These are character romances in specific productions; they are not claims about the actors’ personal relationships. Naming the show and year also matters because some telenovelas have later versions with different casts.

-
Lucero and Fernando Colunga — Alborada (2005)
Hipólita and Luis are connected through adultery and pregnancy, then reunite. She falls in love with him without knowing that he is her son’s father, an arc built around hidden parentage and a reunion shaped by information she lacks.
-
Thalía and Fernando Colunga — María la del barrio (1995)
María becomes a maid in Luis Fernando’s household. Their relationship develops across a class divide while Soraya tries to separate them. People en Español and Univision both identify Thalía and Colunga with this production.

Kate del Castillo and Guy Ecker — La mentira (1998)
Demetrio seeks revenge over his brother’s death but mistakes one sister for the other. He falls for Verónica while Virginia tries to conceal her deception. Mistaken identity and revenge drive the romance’s central conflict.
-
Rebecca Jones and Alejandro Camacho — Cuna de lobos (1986)
The gallery names Jones and Camacho as its pairing, but its plot summary shifts to a family inheritance scheme and describes Alejandro’s affair and marriage to Vilma, while also naming Catalina Creel, played by María Rubio. That summary does not clearly establish the characters’ relationship to the listed pairing, so it is safer to treat the gallery’s couple-and-show attribution separately from those plot details.
Why the pairings make a memorable set
Across the list, romance is rarely allowed to proceed without a structural obstacle. Some stories put characters on opposite sides of class or family pressure, as in Quinceañera and María la del barrio. Others depend on deception, hidden history or reunion: La mentira, Alborada and Café con aroma de mujer. The variety is part of the appeal: this is a collection of different romance engines, not a consistent ranking on one shared scale.
The gallery’s choices are a snapshot of telenovela romance as celebrated in 2009, drawing on shows released between 1984 and 2005. They should not be mistaken for a current consensus, nor does the source establish where the series can be watched today.
