American Ninja Warrior began in the United States in 2009, but its roots reach back to Japan’s Sasuke competition. The series also sits alongside a wider organized ninja-sport community, whose championship formats are not automatically the rules of the TV show. Here are the documented milestones and distinctions that put the program in context.
How did American Ninja Warrior begin?
USA Ninja’s published timeline places the start of Japan’s Sasuke competition in 1997. It then records a U.S. broadcast of Sasuke / Ninja Warrior on G4 in 2006, followed by the first U.S. season of American Ninja Warrior in 2009. These are timeline milestones, not a full account of the show’s production or licensing history. USA Ninja’s FAQ is the source for this sequence.
What came after the first American season?
The same USA Ninja timeline records several related programs and organized competitions over the following years:
- 2015: Ninja versus Ninja.
- 2016: National League (NNL) and UNAA championships inaugurated.
- 2017: Team Ninja Warrior.
- 2018: American Ninja Warrior Junior.
- 2019 onward: International events, including the Ninja World Championships in Russia in 2019.
- 2022: The Ninja World Cup series began in Manila, and UIPM adopted a ninja speed format for its new modern pentathlon format.
- 2023: Ninja World Cups took place in five countries.
This chronology shows how TV programming and organized competition developed in parallel; it does not mean every listed event followed the show’s format.

How is the TV show different from organized ninja sport?
American Ninja Warrior is a television competition with its own season and production format. USA Ninja describes a broader sports community with national and international events. In its FAQ, the organization distinguishes national championships—which identify a country’s top athletes—from World Cups, World Series, and World Championships, which involve international competition among national teams. That distinction is useful: the show is part of the sport’s public profile, but its rules should not be assumed from a separate championship.
What was the 2024 USA Ninja national championship course like?
USA Ninja’s page for its 2024 US National Championships describes a specific event format: a timed, 100-meter course with 10 speed obstacles. It is an example of an organized ninja-sport championship, not a universal rulebook for American Ninja Warrior.

TBS’s catalog labels Season 17 (2025) as a 14-episode program and lists 120 minutes for each episode. That is catalog metadata; it should not be read as confirmation that a typical broadcast installment runs for two hours. TBS’s program catalog supplies those fields.
