During a June 2024 set visit in Cleveland, James Gunn described a Superman movie that begins after its hero is already established: it opens in action, and Lois Lane and Clark Kent already know each other. His comments, reported by Germain Lussier for Gizmodo on December 17, 2024, also sketched the film’s tone, music, costume, supporting heroes and place in the wider DC universe. These are Gunn’s intentions and production remarks from filming, not a point-by-point account of every detail in the final cut.
How does Gunn’s Superman story begin?
1. It opens in the middle of the action
Gunn said the film does not begin with Clark’s origin. “We just start in the middle of the action,” he told Lussier during the set interview. Superman is already active when the story begins.
2. Lois and Clark already know each other
The movie starts with Lois Lane and Clark Kent acquainted, rather than treating their relationship as a first meeting. That lets the story explore an existing, complicated dynamic instead of spending its opening establishing it.
3. The events unfold over a short period
Gunn said the story takes place over a relatively short span. The interview did not specify an exact number of days, so the remark describes the film’s compressed timeframe without establishing a precise duration.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
4. The title shifted away from “Legacy”
The project was previously called Superman: Legacy. Gunn said he changed the title because “Legacy” felt backward-looking, even though Clark’s connection to both his Kryptonian and human parents remains important to the story’s themes.
What tone and style was Gunn aiming for?
5. Hopeful, fun and grounded can coexist
Gunn described the intended world as hopeful and fun, but also grounded and serious, with humor. He said it would be less comedic than Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad. Those comparisons communicate his aim, not a measured comparison of the finished films.

6. The score, not a playlist of songs, would drive the film
Gunn said John Murphy composed the score, which would include nods to John Williams. He characterized the movie as score-driven rather than song-driven: the musical identity would come primarily from the composed film score, not a collection of featured songs.
7. The aerial action used small drones on sound stages
Gunn described filming aerial action with small drones on sound stages and named Top Gun: Maverick as an influence. This is his account of the production approach shared during the 2024 visit, not an independent technical assessment of the finished effects.

How did Gunn explain the character and costume?
8. The trunks were meant to make Superman approachable
Gunn recalled that David Corenswet argued Superman would want children not to be afraid of him. That idea helped the trunks feel right to Gunn: the costume was intended to communicate approachability, hope and positivity, rather than make the character seem intimidating.
9. Clark and Superman together make up the person
Gunn rejected the idea that one identity alone is the complete character. “I don’t think anybody knows Superman unless they know both of him,” he said, describing Clark and Superman together as the real person.

What did Gunn say about the people around Superman?
10. Mister Terrific has a substantial role
The film features other heroes, including Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. Gunn singled out Mister Terrific as more than a brief appearance, describing him as having a major supporting role and a substantial part in the plot.
11. Lex Luthor is a scientist whose skill can seem almost magical
Gunn described Lex as a scientist whose command of science can make him appear almost like a sorcerer. He also cited All-Star Superman as a particularly strong influence on his approach to Luthor. That identifies a creative influence, not a claim that the movie adapts the comic directly.

12. Lois and Clark’s contrast drives long scenes
Gunn said the relationship is complicated and includes long scenes. He framed its central contrast as Lois, a strong-minded and skeptical journalist, alongside someone with extraordinary powers. The pairing is built around differences in perspective and temperament, not simply Superman’s abilities.
13. Lois’s knowledge remains an open question in Gunn’s answer
Asked whether Lois knows Clark is Superman, Gunn replied, “Well, we’ll see,” then added, “She knows who Superman is.” His answer preserves ambiguity; it does not establish definitively whether she knows Clark’s secret identity.
How does the film fit into the wider DC universe?
14. It should stand on its own while leaving room for more
Gunn said each project should work by itself, even if it plants seeds for later stories. His stated approach balances a self-contained film with the possibility of future DC storytelling rather than making the movie only a setup for another installment.
15. Its events affect Peacemaker season two
Gunn said the events of Superman would affect season two of Peacemaker. The interview established that connection but did not detail the plot consequences.

Gunn described himself as miserable during production and said a lot was riding on the film. The remark gives a glimpse of the pressure he felt while making it; it should not be read as a verdict on the film’s eventual reception or outcome.
