It does show why celebrity-height claims are hard to settle: a number may be a self-report, a profile listing, a third-party estimate, or a measurement, and those are not interchangeable. The documented cases below include one celebrity who said she understated her height and two men whose public figures remain subject to important qualifications.
Why a celebrity height claim is not automatically a fact
A height attached to a famous person can come from several different sources: the person’s own statement, an agency résumé or profile, a publisher’s listing, a third-party estimate, or a direct measurement. Unless the source and conditions are clear, calling one figure an “actual height” goes beyond what the evidence establishes.
Celebheights says its estimates draw on quotes, résumés, photo comparisons, and in-person encounters. That describes a range of evidence, not a standardized or independently verified measurement for every person. The Guardian has reported that disputes persist even after people make in-person comparisons. Its founder and moderator, Rob, says: “The only time an argument should end is when they get measured … Until then I think every celebrity’s height can still be discussed until the end of time.” That is his view of the debate, not a formal measurement standard. The Guardian’s account of celebrity-height disputes describes the problem in more detail.
What the documented examples actually show
Nicole Kidman said she understated her height
The Guardian reported that Kidman said she was 5 feet 11 inches and pretended to be 5 feet 10½ inches to secure auditions. She also recalled being 5 feet 4 inches as a child when an Annie audition had a 5-foot-2-inch cutoff. These are her reported recollections, not independent measurements. Her example is the reverse of the title’s implication: she said she made herself sound shorter, not taller. The Guardian quoted her: “I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall’.” Read the Guardian report on Kidman’s account.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s public statement did not settle the question
A TIME page republishing an Entertainment Weekly report dated October 2, 2015, says Gyllenhaal had publicly stated his height and describes an attempted on-air measurement by Starlee Kine’s Mystery Show and Conan O’Brien. The accessible account does not establish a dependable final barefoot figure, so it cannot support a definitive claim about his “real” height. The TIME page’s account of the measurement attempt is evidence of a public debate, not a verified result.
Kevin Hart gave a figure with footwear specified
In an April 22, 2024 report, Just Jared quoted Hart answering a height question during a 60 Minutes interview. He said “5-foot-5, like with a shoe on, like a sneaker,” and added that a boot could get him to “5’5”³ and a half.” This is Hart’s interview answer as reported by Just Jared, not an independent measurement; the sneaker and boot context matters when interpreting the numbers. Read the report quoting Hart’s answer.

Danny DeVito’s disputed description is not a correction
The Guardian says DeVito has described himself as “five feet short” on a good day. It also recounts an anonymous Celebheights commenter’s estimate of 4 feet 10½ inches, based on seeing someone the commenter thought was DeVito on a subway. That recollection does not confirm the person’s identity or provide a measurement. A five-foot cardboard cutout marketed as DeVito is likewise not evidence of the actor’s height. The Guardian’s report presents these details as part of the dispute, not as a verified correction.

- Identify the source: Is the figure a direct statement, profile or résumé listing, publisher entry, third-party estimate, or documented measurement?
- Check the conditions: Was the person measured barefoot or wearing shoes? Is the date and method given?
- Separate direction from accuracy: A claim may be understated, overstated, or unresolved. A difference between two websites does not establish intentional deception.
- Weigh the evidence: A person’s contemporaneous statement or a documented measurement is different from a photo comparison, anonymous recollection, or forum estimate.
- Keep the attribution beside the number: Say who gave or estimated the figure; do not convert an estimate into an “actual” height.
Why a verified list of 15 is not supported
The material available for this topic does not establish an original 15-person list or reliable, attributable evidence that 15 short celebrities intentionally inflate their heights. The examples that can be documented do not prove that premise: Kidman described understating her height; Hart’s answer included shoes; Gyllenhaal’s reported measurement attempt did not yield a dependable final barefoot result in the accessible account; and DeVito’s supposed alternative figure rests on anecdote rather than measurement. Naming additional people as liars on the strength of estimates or website discrepancies would turn uncertainty into an accusation.
