No public evidence in the sources cited here shows that Hollywood has stopped casting Charlize Theron. Recent projects point the other way: she starred in Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 and Apex, and ELLE reported that she is set to star in and produce Tyrant. The confusion may partly come from one prominent recasting: Theron did not play Furiosa in the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which follows the character’s earlier years.
Why isn’t Charlize Theron playing Furiosa in Furiosa?
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel, not a continuation with the same-age character. Director George Miller said he developed an origin story spanning 16 years of Furiosa’s life. Because the story follows her at a younger age, Anya Taylor-Joy was cast as the lead. Miller explained to TIME in May 2024: “By the time it came to it, we had to go with a younger actor.”
That is a specific explanation for a role in a story set earlier in the character’s life. It does not establish that Theron stopped receiving roles or that studios have stopped casting her more broadly. TIME’s interview with George Miller provides the context for the prequel’s casting.
What recent projects show Theron is still working?
The Old Guard 2
Netflix’s July 2025 article identifies Theron as Andy in The Old Guard 2 and said the sequel was streaming on the service at the time. Netflix describes the franchise as based on the world created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, with Rucka writing the graphic novels on which the films are based. Streaming availability can change by date and location. Netflix Tudum’s sequel guide has the film and source-material details.

Apex
Theron stars as Sasha in Apex, which debuted on Netflix on April 24, 2026. In an April 30 article, Netflix reported that the film launched at No. 1 on the service with 38.2 million views. That is Netflix’s own reported figure, not an independently verified measure. Netflix Tudum’s article about Apex identifies the character and reports the launch figure.
Tyrant and other work reported in 2026
ELLE’s Summer 2026 interview says Theron will star in and produce Tyrant. It also lists Jane and Two for the Money as projects in development. These are different kinds of updates: a reported starring-and-producing project is not the same as a released film, and projects in development may change before they reach production. The interview also discusses her work on The Odyssey and Apex. ELLE’s 2026 interview gives the project details.

Does the status of Atomic Blonde 2 explain the claim?
Not by itself. In the ELLE interview, Theron said of Atomic Blonde 2, “I think we might’ve passed the moment.” That comment is about the prospects for that particular project. It is not evidence of a general casting freeze, and it should not be treated as a statement about every role or future film.

No supported list of 15 reasons can be made from the available public evidence. The sources cited here document recent starring roles and a forthcoming project, but do not provide a current statistic tracking Theron’s role offers or casting frequency. They also do not establish a broader Hollywood decision to stop hiring her. Claims about ageism, appearance, box-office results, personal choices or studio strategy would require evidence beyond these sources.
