There is no reliable, documented set of 15 photographs that Ronda Rousey “should be ashamed of.” The best-known controversy is a Tonight Show image she said was altered without her knowledge to make her arms look smaller. She apologized for sharing it and said the edit conflicted with her beliefs. Other coverage describes private photographs she said were taken without her approval, alongside editorial shoots she chose to do. Those are distinct stories—not a shame gallery.
Why was Ronda Rousey’s Tonight Show photo altered?
In February 2016, Rousey said she had been sent an image from her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to share on social media. She said she did not know it had been retouched to make her arms look smaller. In an apology reproduced by TIME, she wrote: “I was sent a picture to share on social for Fallon that was altered without me knowing to make my arms look smaller.”

Rousey apologized for sharing the image and objected to the alteration, adding: “This goes against everything I believe and I am extremely proud of every inch of my body.” Her account does not support the claim that she knowingly endorsed the retouching. Nor does the report establish who made the edit or why.
What did Rousey say about private photographs?
In 2015, Rousey told MMA Fighting that an ex-boyfriend had taken naked photographs of her without her approval. She described choosing to pose for ESPN afterward so that public images would be made on her terms: “If it’s going to get out there, then I want it to get out there on my terms.”

That distinction matters: her account identifies the private photographs as unauthorized, while the ESPN Body Issue shoot was a choice. The existence or circulation of private images is not evidence that Rousey consented to them, and they should not be treated as entertainment or reproduced as article art.
Which photo shoots did Rousey choose?
ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue
Rousey told MMA Fighting that she chose the ESPN shoot in the context of taking control over how she was publicly photographed. It should not be conflated with the private images she said were taken without permission.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue
In a separate 2015 interview, Rousey said she was comfortable with her Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoot and discussed a boundary she had spoken about with her mother. She also described deliberately presenting a more athletic body in shoots with a feminine or sexual purpose, saying: “I purposely, any time I do a shoot that’s aimed for any kind of feminine or sexual purpose, I try to be a little bigger on purpose just to promote a healthier body image.” That is her stated perspective at the time, not evidence that a photograph was embarrassing or regretted. MMA Fighting reported her comments.
How the photo stories differ
| Image context | What Rousey said or what reporting establishes | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Tonight Show promotional image, 2016 | Rousey said the image she was sent had been altered to make her arms look smaller and that she did not know about the edit before sharing it. TIME | That she knowingly requested or approved the retouching. |
| Private photographs, discussed in 2015 | Rousey said an ex-boyfriend took naked photographs without her approval. MMA Fighting | That she consented to their taking or distribution. |
| ESPN Body Issue shoot | Rousey described posing for ESPN as a chosen way to have public images on her terms. MMA Fighting | That a chosen editorial shoot and unauthorized private photos are the same event. |
| Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoot, 2015 | Rousey said she was comfortable with the shoot and discussed her body-image approach. MMA Fighting | That the photographs show shame, regret, or a private emotional state. |
| Competition photography | UFC maintains an official Rousey gallery with event-photo material and credit information. | That an image in an official gallery is automatically licensed for reuse. |
What Rousey has said about body image
In an October 2015 report, TIME summarized Rousey’s comments about the effect a weight-related remark had on her and how she came to embrace her athletic build. The account is useful context for understanding why she objected to the Tonight Show edit, but a photo alone cannot establish what she privately felt about it. TIME’s report presents her statements rather than a basis for assigning her shame.

Can any of these photos be reused?
Not simply because they appeared in a news story, social post, or official gallery. UFC’s gallery can help identify event photographs and their credits, but image credit is not blanket permission. Obtain the appropriate license or permission for any image used. Do not reproduce or link to private photographs that Rousey said were taken without her approval.

Rousey returned to MMA against Gina Carano on May 16, 2026, and won by armbar in 17 seconds, according to the Associated Press, which described the event as Netflix’s first live MMA event. That is current career context, not evidence that any photograph is shameful.
