They can show who respondents criticized at the time—and what behavior an editor found troubling—but they cannot be combined into a current verdict on who is objectively worst.
Why there is no defensible ranked list of 15
“Worst role model” depends on who is doing the judging and what they are judging: family life, suitability for children, or conduct depicted in a story. The sources available for this topic do not identify an intended set of 15 or apply one consistent test to all the names. The fairest approach is to keep each source’s findings in its own context rather than manufacture a single ranking.
The examples below are therefore not a ranking. Poll results are reported as respondents’ opinions at a particular time; criticism of fictional characters is an interpretation of scripted behavior. Neither establishes a person’s objective character or proves that a role model caused an audience to behave in a particular way.
Public figures named in historical UK polls
A 2010 question about a “strong family unit”
A 2010 YouGov survey asked, “Which of these are the worst role models in our society for a strong family unit?” In its weighted sample of 1,578 respondents, Jordan/Katie Price was selected by 44%, Kerry Katona by 15%, John Terry by 10%, Ashley Cole by 7%, the Royal Family by 5%, Kate Moss by 2%, and Vernon Kay by 1%. These percentages describe responses to that specific question in that survey; they are not a present-day measure or a general assessment of each person.

A 2015 poll of parents about role models for children
The Guardian reported in 2015 that 78% of 2,287 British parents with at least one child under 10 chose Miley Cyrus as the female celebrity they would least like as a role model for their children. Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian followed, but the report cited here does not give their percentages. This was a poll of a defined group of parents, not a verdict shared by all parents or evidence about the celebrities’ effect on children.
A separate 2009 poll naming a fictional character
A 2009 secondary report said that Homer Simpson was voted the worst role model in a survey of 2,000 UK adults. That finding concerns a fictional character and a separate poll; it cannot be treated as a direct comparison with either of the celebrity surveys.

Fictional characters criticized for their actions
WatchMojo’s editorial list concerns characters in romantic comedies, not the actors who portray them. Its examples are judgments about behavior written into particular stories:
- Zack Siler: criticized for making a manipulative bet involving Laney.
- John Bender: criticized for harassing Claire.
- Sierra Burgess: criticized for deception and betrayal.
These are interpretations of fictional conduct. They should not be transferred to the performers, and an editorial list is not a survey or an objective measurement of influence.

How to read “worst role model” claims
- Check the question. “Worst for a strong family unit” and “least wanted as a role model for my child” ask about different concerns.
- Check who answered. The cited surveys involved different groups: a weighted UK sample, British parents of young children, and UK adults.
- Keep the date attached. The poll findings are from 2009, 2010 and 2015; they do not establish current opinion.
- Separate opinion from evidence of influence. A respondent selecting a celebrity does not show that the celebrity’s behavior caused harm or changed anyone’s actions.
- Separate characters from performers. Criticism of a scripted character describes a story, not the actor’s real-life conduct.
Bal Ram Singh, identified by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Center for Indic Studies as its director, wrote in 2004: “There is a fundamental issue with accepting of sports figures, politicians or film/TV stars as role models.” That is Singh’s stated opinion, not a university research finding. It underlines why a list like this should explain its criteria rather than present a popularity poll as settled fact.
