Donald Trump and the Clintons had documented social, charitable and political contact, but that record does not establish that they were close friends. Bill and Hillary Clinton attended Trump’s 2005 wedding, Trump’s foundation later gave to the Clinton Foundation, and by the 2016 campaign Trump and Hillary Clinton were political opponents. Clinton put the distinction plainly: “We were not friends.”
What the public record shows
The evidence is best understood as a timeline of contact and changing public statements—not proof of a deep personal bond or a political bargain. Records and reporting document overlapping New York and political circles, a wedding invitation, charitable transactions and, later, open campaign conflict.
1. The Clintons and Trump moved in overlapping circles
Donald Trump and the Clintons were prominent figures in New York and national public life. That overlap helps explain documented contact, but by itself does not establish how close they were.
2. Clinton Library records describe several earlier contacts
The Clinton Presidential Library’s finding aid lists records including a charity-dinner invitation for the president in Atlantic City, birthday notes from President Clinton, White House event invitations and a Trump Tower photo opportunity. The finding aid describes about 467 pages in 10 folders, while cautioning that the responsive FOIA collection is selective. 3. Bill and Hillary Clinton attended Trump’s 2005 wedding
The Clintons attended Donald Trump and Melania Knauss’s wedding in 2005. It is a concrete marker of social contact, but attendance alone does not prove close friendship. Reuters; PolitiFact.
4. The Trump Foundation gave $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation in 2009
PolitiFact reported that the Donald J. Trump Foundation—not a documented personal check from Trump’s income—gave $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation in 2009. PolitiFact’s review.

5. The gift came four years after the wedding
The 2009 donation cannot have secured the Clintons’ attendance at the 2005 wedding; the dates rule out that sequence. The records cited here do not establish a connection between the gift and the wedding.
6. The foundation paid $10,000 for a gala table in 2010
PolitiFact also reported that the Trump Foundation paid $10,000 for a table at a Clinton Foundation gala in 2010. This was a separate transaction the following year, not the same as the 2009 gift. PolitiFact.

What Trump and Clinton said before the campaign
7. Trump spoke warmly about Hillary Clinton in 2012
Reuters reported that in a March 2012 Fox News interview Trump said: “I am biased because I have known her for years. I live in New York. She lives in New York. I really like her and her husband both a lot. I think she really works hard.” That records Trump’s own public description, not independent proof that the two sides viewed the relationship the same way. Reuters.
8. Hillary Clinton rejected the label “friends”
In excerpts from a People magazine interview released in February 2016, Clinton said, “We were not friends,” while adding, “We knew each other, obviously, in New York.” Reuters reported both remarks. Together, they distinguish familiarity from friendship. Reuters.

9. The two accounts are not the same
Trump’s 2012 remarks described his own positive view of Hillary and Bill Clinton. Clinton’s 2016 answer acknowledged that they knew one another while denying that they were friends. The statements can coexist: social and professional familiarity does not require mutual closeness.

10. Bill Clinton reportedly called Trump in spring 2015
The Washington Post reported that Bill Clinton privately called Trump as Trump weighed a presidential run, citing associates of both men. The report does not establish the call’s purpose as fact, so it is best treated as attributed reporting rather than evidence of a settled political arrangement. The Washington Post.

11. Trump entered the presidential contest as a familiar public figure
By the 2015 campaign, Trump and Hillary Clinton were no longer simply figures with some prior social and public contact: they were contenders in the same presidential race. Their earlier interactions do not, on their own, explain or invalidate their subsequent political positions.
12. Trump criticized Clinton’s qualifications and record
During the campaign, Trump attacked Hillary Clinton’s qualifications and political record. This was a public political dispute, distinct from the earlier social contact documented by the wedding and library records.
13. Clinton criticized Trump’s rhetoric
Clinton, in turn, criticized Trump’s rhetoric. Voice of America carried Reuters reporting on the campaign-era criticism. Voice of America.
14. The change was political, not proof that earlier contact was false
The shift from cordial descriptions and social contact to adversarial campaign statements is visible in the record. It shows that their public relationship changed; it does not establish that earlier contact was insincere or that it amounted to close friendship.

The wedding, foundation transactions, library records, and attributed public statements document different forms of contact across several years. The cited evidence does not demonstrate that the donation bought wedding attendance or that earlier contact constituted a political deal.
