Balance a narrow leg with volume up top
Rihanna’s loose T-shirt and Cara Delevingne’s oversized jacket demonstrate one straightforward contrast: a close fit below can sit comfortably alongside a relaxed layer above. The Zoe Report’s stylist Hattie Doolittle likewise recommends trying an oversized coat or a semi-sheer blouse rather than an elongated tunic. These are one stylist’s suggestions, not rules every outfit must follow.

Use the rise and hem to shape the look
High-waisted jeans appear in the reported looks by Delevingne and Bieber, while Rihanna’s cuffed hem makes the ankle part of the styling. A cuff can draw attention to footwear; an uncuffed ankle-length hem may create a cleaner line. Check how the hem falls with the shoes you actually plan to wear.
Choose a wash for the rest of the outfit
The examples range from dark blue and black to light wash and white denim. Doolittle advises experimenting with light and dark hues and skipping middle washes. Treat that as her preference, not a universal test of whether jeans look current.

Are skinny jeans back in style?
The evidence supports a recurrence in fashion coverage rather than a definitive market-wide comeback. Vogue India discussed a return in the context of 2024 collections, and The Zoe Report documented celebrity outfits from 2023 to 2025. Those reports show renewed visibility, but do not establish how widely people are buying or wearing the fit in 2026.
Vogue India attributed a historical figure to The New York Times: ultra-slim jeans accounted for 34 per cent of women’s jeans sales in the US in 2021. That is a dated, US-specific figure reported through Vogue India—not a current sales share or an independently verified measure of today’s trend.

Hattie Doolittle, identified by The Zoe Report as a New York-based stylist, describes the trend cycle this way: “I think trends on the runway impact celebrity styling, and in reverse, street style can influence the runways,” Doolittle tells TZR. Her explanation is a perspective on how trends can circulate, not proof that every runway or celebrity appearance drives a broad revival.

What to consider when choosing close-fitting jeans
- Fit: Skinny jeans follow the leg closely; slim jeans are also narrow but may leave more room. Check the garment’s cut rather than relying on the label alone.
- Rise: Low, mid and high rises sit differently on the body and change where a top or waistband falls.
- Denim feel: Doolittle advises shopping for “true denim and not stretch fabric,” saying true denim gives a sharper look. That is her styling preference; comfort and the amount of stretch you want are personal choices.
- Wash: Choose among light, dark, black, white or colored denim based on the outfit and how much contrast you want.
- Length and shoes: Consider whether the hem reaches the ankle, needs a cuff or bunches at the shoe. Try it with boots, flats, mules or heels before deciding.
- Overall proportions: Think about whether the jeans will sit under a cropped top, loose shirt, tailored jacket or oversized coat.
