New Zealand is the only country where Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. Tourism New Zealand says filming spanned more than 150 locations across both islands. This guide picks 15 places from that larger set and explains what visitors can actually see: Hobbiton is a permanent attraction, while most other stops are landscapes or parks where temporary sets have gone.
What to expect at New Zealand’s filming locations
A filming location is not necessarily a surviving piece of Middle-earth. With the exception of Hobbiton, physical sets were dismantled after filming, in part to restore landscapes, particularly conservation land, according to Tourism New Zealand Travel Trade. The places below are real-world landscapes and public spaces associated with scenes; the film view may have been altered by set construction, camera work or digital effects.
Access varies. Some locations are straightforward urban or park walks; Mount Sunday involves a walk, Hobbiton is a managed attraction on a working farm, and the Pelennor Fields site near Twizel is private land. Check current operator information, access arrangements, track conditions and road conditions before travelling.
North Island locations
1. Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata — the Shire
The Waikato dairy landscape stood in for the Shire. Unlike the temporary sets at most other filming locations, Hobbiton was rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy and remains a permanent visitor attraction. It is a managed tour on a working farm, so consult the Hobbiton operator’s current visitor information before planning a visit.

3. Mount Victoria, Wellington — Hobbiton Woods
Forest paths on Mount Victoria represented the woods where the hobbits hid from the Black Riders. The location is within walking distance of central Wellington, making it one of the easiest filming sites to add to a city itinerary.
4. Hutt River, between Moonshine and Tōtara Park — the River Anduin
This stretch of river doubled for the Anduin. It is a landscape location rather than a surviving film set; the film’s exact view should not be expected on arrival.

The area was used for filming involving the Nazgûl and mûmakil associated with the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. It is a real park setting, not an intact battlefield set.

The distinctive natural pinnacles represented the route sought by Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. Check local access and track conditions before visiting this landscape stop.

South Island locations
11. Takaka Hill, Nelson Tasman — Chetwood Forest
Takaka Hill represented the forest where Strider led the hobbits away from the Black Riders. The location is part of a broader regional trip rather than a surviving film set.
12. Mount Sunday, Canterbury — Edoras
The hill was the site of the Edoras set, which is gone. Visitors can walk from Hakatere Potts Road; Tourism New Zealand’s travel-trade guide describes the approach as a 30-minute one-way walk. Check access and conditions before going.
13. Fields near Twizel, Mackenzie Country — Pelennor Fields
Battle scenes were filmed on private land. Tourism New Zealand says tours can be arranged in Twizel and recommends organized tours for private-land locations. Do not assume public access or enter without permission.

14. Arrow River near Arrowtown — the Ford of Bruinen
The Arrow River represented the Ford of Bruinen. The area also includes Wilcox Green, used for Gladden Fields scenes. These are landscape locations, not preserved sets.
15. Paradise and Glenorchy, plus the Waiau River in Fiordland — Lothlórien and the Anduin
The beech forest on the road to Paradise represented Lothlórien. Farther south, the Waiau River between Te Anau and Manapouri represented the Anduin. These are separate regional destinations, not adjacent stops: plan them as part of a wider trip through the Queenstown–Glenorchy and Fiordland areas.
Plan by region, not by checklist
The 15 places are a visitor-focused shortlist from a much larger set of filming locations, not a claim that these are the only or definitive sites. Distances between regions are substantial, so build a route around clusters rather than trying to tick off the full list in a short trip.
- North Island: Matamata and Hobbiton; Tongariro and Ohakune; Wellington and nearby parks and forests; and the Wairarapa for Putangirua Pinnacles.
- South Island: Nelson Tasman; Canterbury and Mount Sunday; Twizel; the Queenstown, Arrowtown and Glenorchy area; and Fiordland around Te Anau.
Tourism New Zealand advises: “If your clients are confident drivers, recommend they hire a car and drive themselves to The Lord of the Rings filming locations.” The same travel-trade guidance says organized tours can be appropriate for private-land locations. Treat named tours as itinerary examples, not a guarantee of current availability; check the operator’s live schedule and access arrangements.
For further location planning, DOC names Ian Brodie’s The Lord of the Rings Location Guide Extended Edition and the New Zealand Road Spiral Atlas as resources featuring filming locations. DOC says its listed coordinates are guidelines, not assured access directions, so use current local access information for the actual visit.
A Wellington movie experience that is not a filming location
Wētā Workshop Experiences offers behind-the-scenes tours and hands-on workshops about movie effects. Tourism New Zealand explicitly distinguishes it from filming locations: it is a production experience, not a place where the trilogy was filmed. It can complement a Wellington itinerary if that is the kind of visit you want.
