Some toys from the 1970s have slipped from everyday memory; others on this list remain familiar landmarks. “Forgotten” is a playful lens, not a claim that every toy vanished or was discontinued. The list also needs one date correction: the matching article describes GE’s Show and Tell Photograph as a 1964 launch, so it does not fit a strict 1970s list. Here are the 13 names, with that distinction and the limits of the available documentation made clear.
What counts as a forgotten 1970s toy?
There is no objective measure of whether a toy has been forgotten. Cultural visibility, collector interest, and whether a product stayed in production are different things. The names below come from a 2025 list, but its specific sales figures, engineering details, and claims about influence are not independently established here. They should not be treated as verified history.
The period itself brought changing tastes: EBSCO’s overview describes the decline of Western themes by the middle of the decade, new electronic and computer play, and greater prominence for role-playing games and film merchandise. It also notes a broader decline in toy-gun interest in the context of Vietnam-era attitudes and concerns about violence. Those trends help explain the era, but do not establish what happened to any one toy on this list. EBSCO’s overview of toys and games in the 1970s provides that wider context.
The 13 toys and games
This is a guide to the entries in the source list, not a ranking by sales, rarity, or present-day value. Where the available material does not independently confirm a release date or maker, it is better to leave that detail open than to repeat an unsupported claim.

Why some toys faded while others stayed visible
A list of forgotten toys can blur two different stories: products that now attract little public attention and products that remain part of shared cultural memory. Kenner’s history offers a useful counterpoint. It records Baby Alive in 1973, Stretch Armstrong in 1976, and the Star Wars license in 1977. The chronology says Star Wars became Kenner’s most powerful toy success and that 1978 sales topped $200 million, largely due to Star Wars. These are company-history figures from a collector source, not an audited financial report, but they show how strongly the decade’s enduring licensed toys could shape memory. KennerCollector.com’s company chronology sets out those milestones.
Western playsets offer a different example of a fading theme. EBSCO says Marx playsets such as Fort Apache and Battleground were prominent in the 1950s and 1960s, then faded after changes at the company in the early 1970s. It also describes Marx’s Best of the West articulated figures and says the Western theme had played out by the middle of the decade. That is useful context for shifting tastes, not evidence about the fate of the 13 entries above.
How to verify a toy you remember
Names can be imprecise, and a contemporary list is not a substitute for a dated catalog or product record. If you are identifying a childhood toy, look for a maker’s mark, packaging, catalog description, or other period documentation before relying on a claimed date, rarity, or sales total.
- Check the date: distinguish a 1970s release from a toy introduced earlier or merely remembered from that decade.
- Identify the exact product: similar names or later versions can make a broad label misleading.
- Separate cultural memory from market history: a toy being recognizable today does not establish how many were sold, while obscurity does not prove rarity.
- Consult institutional records: The Strong National Museum of Play’s 2016 finding aid says its collections include more than 2,000 Kenner-produced toys and that its archives hold dozens of Kenner trade catalogs. That is a count of the museum’s collection, not the number made or sold. The museum also notes that Easy-Bake Oven and Star Wars action figures are among Kenner toys inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. The Strong’s finding aid to the Corky Steiner Kenner History Collection points to useful archival material.
The best answer to “Was this toy forgotten?” may depend on who remembers it and what evidence survives. A dated catalog can help establish what a product was; it cannot, by itself, measure how much it lives on in public memory.
