These 13 picks approach romance in different ways: some make it the engine of a high-concept fantasy, while others place it inside a quieter coming-of-age story or a larger drama. “Best” here is an editorial guide to distinct romantic experiences, not a universal ranking. Romance prominence and prerequisites matter as much as premise, so each entry notes what kind of story to expect.
Fantasy and high-concept romance
Your Name (2016)
A rural schoolgirl, Mitsuha, and a city boy, Taki, begin switching bodies. Their strange connection turns into a search for one another as they try to understand what is happening. That supernatural hook gives the romance urgency without making the film only a meet-cute. GKIDS’ official film page provides the synopsis and lists on-demand options, though availability varies by country and can change.
For a physical copy, GKIDS lists a Blu-ray release dated August 25, 2026, with English and Japanese audio, English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles, and Region A/1 playback. Region A/1 compatibility matters if your player is from another region. The distributor’s listing is not a guarantee of current stock; check its Blu-ray page for current details. GKIDS also lists 4K UHD, Amazon among Blu-ray retailers, and Apple TV and Prime Video as on-demand options on its film page.
Weathering With You (2019)
Runaway teenager Hodaka meets Hina, a girl with the ability to influence the weather. Their relationship unfolds in a rain-soaked Tokyo, where the fantastical premise gives a personal bond consequences beyond the couple. GKIDS’ official synopsis makes this a natural choice if what you want after Your Name is another romance shaped by an extraordinary phenomenon. GKIDS lists on-demand viewing and a Blu-ray/DVD edition, but those listings do not establish availability in every territory.

- The disk has English audio and subtitles.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
Makoto gains the ability to leap through time and uses it to dodge ordinary teenage complications. The romance develops alongside friendship, regret and the cost of trying to control events. It is a good fit for viewers who want a coming-of-age story with a speculative device rather than a romance that stays in a purely realistic register.
Hello World (2019)
A shy Kyoto student meets a version of himself from the future, who says he must save the girl he loves. The science-fiction premise makes the romance a mission as well as a relationship, with twists that reward viewers comfortable with a more elaborate setup.
Rank #2
- The disk has English audio and subtitles.
Grounded relationships and everyday feeling
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2020)
Tsuneo, a university student, meets Josee, a young woman who spends much of her time in her grandmother’s care. Their connection grows through everyday encounters and changing expectations rather than a supernatural puzzle. It is the more grounded pick for a viewer who wants romance to take the lead. The official Japanese film site confirms the film and provides story material; local titles, editions and availability may differ by market.
Tamako Love Story (2014)
This gentle romance follows Tamako as her longtime friend Mochizō prepares to leave town. Its appeal is in the shift from familiar friendship to the possibility of saying what each person feels. Netflix Japan’s anime movie catalog lists the film, but that regional catalog entry does not establish availability elsewhere.

Rank #3
- Factory sealed DVD
It is a continuation of the Tamako Market series, not the safest blind starting point. Watching the series first gives the neighborhood, family and friendship dynamics their context; go straight to the film only if you are comfortable entering an established story partway through.
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop (2021)
Two self-conscious teenagers connect over music, poetry and the small details of a summer in town. Its bright visual style and low-key premise make it a lighter, less fate-driven alternative to high-concept romances. Choose it for a youthful first-crush story rather than intense melodrama.
Rank #4
Wistful longing and quiet encounters
The Garden of Words (2013)
A high-school student skips class to sketch in a rainy garden, where he repeatedly encounters an older woman who seems adrift. The film is brief and atmospheric, built around conversations, rain and an uneven connection rather than a conventional courtship. The age difference and the characters’ different stages of life are part of the story, so it is better read as a complicated encounter than uncomplicated wish fulfillment. Criterion’s synopsis describes the setup.
5 Centimeters per Second (2007)
This melancholy story traces how distance and time shape a bond that begins in youth. It is less about the momentum of a new romance than the ache of memory and the ways people drift apart. It suits viewers seeking wistfulness, not a neatly resolved love story.
Best Value
- Factory sealed DVD
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Shizuku, a book-loving student, meets Seiji, a boy with a serious ambition of his own. Their affection grows alongside questions about talent, effort and what kind of future each wants. The romance is tender but not the only point: this is also a story about discovering a direction.

A Silent Voice (2016)
Shoya tries to make amends with Shoko, a deaf girl he bullied as a child. Their relationship matters, but the film is first and foremost a drama about bullying, disability, guilt and repair; it should not be sold as a straightforward romance. Consider it if you want an emotionally demanding story in which connection and affection sit within a broader reckoning. Recommendation guides such as GamesRadar+’s anime film list and Anime.com associate it with similar anime-film viewing, not with proof that romance is its primary genre.
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
Set in 1960s Yokohama, the film follows Umi and Shun as they grow close while helping save their school’s clubhouse. Its romance is part of a larger story about community, family history and change. The period setting gives their relationship a gentle, old-fashioned texture.
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (2018)
Maquia, a member of a long-lived people, raises an orphaned human boy. The central bond is maternal rather than romantic, and the film’s emotional force comes from love, attachment and the passage of time more broadly. It belongs on this list only for viewers open to a wider definition of romance and connection; it is not a couple-centered love story.

- Want another fantastical romance after Your Name? Try Weathering With You, then The Girl Who Leapt Through Time or Hello World for different speculative angles.
- Prefer a grounded relationship? Start with Josee, the Tiger and the Fish or Tamako Love Story; the latter benefits from the series first.
- Want a quiet, wistful mood? Choose The Garden of Words for an intimate encounter, or 5 Centimeters per Second for a story shaped by distance.
- Want a broader drama? A Silent Voice places connection inside a story of harm and accountability; Maquia centers parent-child love rather than romantic pairing.
Where to watch or buy
Streaming rights change over time and by country. The distributor pages for Your Name and Weathering With You list on-demand options, while Netflix Japan’s catalog is specifically a Japan listing. Check the service available in your location before planning a watch. For a disc purchase, use the official edition details to confirm audio, subtitles and region compatibility, then verify retailer stock; a listed format or retailer is not a promise that it is currently available to you.
