The Family Man offers a different kind of switch, dropping its protagonist into an alternate life. Trading Places reverses two men’s social circumstances, but Christmas is a setting rather than the story’s central engine. Those are the three films whose premises are supported by the available studio descriptions; the evidence does not establish 13 verified matches.
What counts as a Christmas movie about swapping places?
“Swap places” can describe several different story devices, and they are not interchangeable. A literal home exchange changes where characters live. An alternate-life story shows someone a different version of their own life. A reversal of circumstances changes characters’ social or financial positions without making them the same person. Calling all three a swap is useful shorthand, but the distinction helps set expectations.
These categories also differ in how strongly Christmas drives the plot. A film can take place during the holiday season without being primarily a Christmas story.
The verified picks
| Film | Kind of switch | How Christmas fits | Rating listed by the studio |

| The Holiday (2006) | Literal home exchange | The women switch homes for the holiday; the exchange is central to the setup. | Not stated in the cited Sony Pictures description. |
| The Family Man (2000) | Alternate life | The story places Jack in a family life at Christmas, but the cited Universal description does not establish Christmas as the premise of the change. | PG-13, as listed by Universal. |
| Trading Places (1983) | Reversed circumstances | A Christmas-season setting, not a Christmas-centered premise according to the cited Paramount description. | R, as listed by Paramount. |
The Holiday (2006): a real home exchange
This is the most direct match. Sony Pictures describes Iris and Amanda meeting through a home-exchange website and impulsively switching homes for the holiday. The change of address sets the story in motion, while the film is classified by Sony as a comedy-romance.

Choose it if the appeal is seeing two characters step into each other’s surroundings. It is the only confirmed pick here in which the swap itself is a literal exchange of homes.
The Family Man (2000): an alternate version of life
Universal describes Jack Campbell as a wealthy Wall Street trader who wakes up in suburban New Jersey beside Kate, a former girlfriend, with two children and a different life. That makes the film an alternate-life story, not a body swap or an exchange of identities between two characters.

Its premise is about encountering a life Jack did not choose, so it suits viewers looking for a Christmas-season story with a larger what-if question rather than a literal exchange.
Trading Places (1983): a wager reverses social circumstances
Paramount’s description centers on the Duke brothers’ wager over whether Billy Ray Valentine could succeed as Louis Winthorpe III if their circumstances were reversed. That supports calling it a reversal of circumstances, not a literal swap of homes, bodies, or identities.

It is therefore a different audience choice from a family-oriented Christmas movie, and its holiday-season setting should not be mistaken for a plot driven by Christmas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a verified list of 13
A list can reach 13 by stretching “swap places” to cover stories about changed perspectives, mistaken identities, or characters pursuing the same goal. But those are not necessarily place swaps, and a familiar holiday title is not a fit just because it appears beside the phrase.
Rank #4
For example, Paramount’s official synopsis for All I Want for Christmas (1991) describes siblings Ethan and Hallie devising a plan to reunite their divorced parents. That synopsis does not support describing the film as a home swap or a swap of holiday plans. Other titles sometimes grouped into broad Christmas-movie lists—including Jingle All the Way, Elf, and The Santa Clause—are not established as matches by the studio descriptions cited here. They should not be presented as verified swaps on that basis alone.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Which one should you watch?
- For the clearest literal swap: The Holiday, where the home exchange is explicit.
- For a what-if alternate life: The Family Man, which places Jack in a different family life.
- For an adult comedy-drama about reversed fortunes: Trading Places; Paramount lists it as R-rated, and Christmas is not the central premise in its official description.
