For the strongest mix of queer storytelling, animation, and emotional impact, start with Nimona or Flee. This ranked watchlist also includes animated family features where LGBTQ+ representation is present but less central. The order is an editorial judgment—not an objective consensus—and the distinction between explicit stories and interpretation matters.
How this ranking works
The ranking weighs how clear and central the LGBTQ+ story or character is, the film’s storytelling and emotional impact, the range of perspectives and genres, and how confidently it can be recommended to a viewer choosing a movie. A brief or supporting portrayal can be valuable, but it ranks below a film built around queer experience unless its broader strengths make it a better overall recommendation.

“Explicit” here means the film itself establishes the identity or relationship; “supporting” means it is present but not the main story; “inferred” means a reading is not confirmed by the available evidence. Those categories are not interchangeable.
The ranked list
1. Nimona (2023)
Why it ranks first: This contemporary, book-based animated feature is a strong all-around starting point, with its LGBTQ+ characters catalogued in a 2024 peer-reviewed study. The film balances an adventurous fantasy story with a prominent bond between Nimona and Ballister Blackheart. It is a feature rather than a documentary, and its queer relevance is more than a speculative audience reading.

Representation and audience: A 2024 study catalogs Nimona and Ballister as LGBTQ+ characters, though the cited material does not specify every identity label or establish that each is explicitly named on screen. Common Sense Media rates the film PG and recommends it for ages 11+, noting violence and positive messages. That recommendation is a guide, not a guarantee of suitability for every child. The film is based on a graphic novel.
2. Flee (2021)
Why it ranks here: Flee brings documentary testimony and refugee experience to a list otherwise weighted toward fictional adventure. TIME describes it as an animated docudrama directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, recounting Amin Nawabi’s true story of flight from Afghanistan to Denmark. The account includes Nawabi preparing to marry his longtime boyfriend, making his relationship part of a personal history shaped by displacement.
Rank #2
Representation and audience: The relationship is directly reported in TIME’s summary, while the film’s documentary form makes personal testimony—not a conventional fictional romance—the center of its approach. It is a feature-length docudrama. The cited source does not establish an age recommendation, so viewers should consult local ratings and content guidance.
3. Strange World (2022)
Why it ranks here: This family adventure combines a journey into an unfamiliar world with intergenerational family conflict. Ethan’s presence gives LGBTQ+ viewers a recognizable character in a mainstream animated feature, though the film’s main plot is not a romance or an exploration of queer identity.
Rank #3
- Warner manufacturing
- Physical movie
- Creed dvd audio dvd audio
Representation and audience: A 2024 study catalogs Ethan among the film’s LGBTQ+ representation. The available evidence does not establish more detail about how his identity is named on screen, so it is best described as a supporting representation rather than a central queer story. Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+ and notes adventure, family drama, scares, and peril. It is a feature tied to Disney’s original story rather than a documentary.
4. Lightyear (2022)
Why it ranks here: This science-fiction adventure includes a family relationship among its characters, offering a visible instance of LGBTQ+ representation in a major animated release. The representation is meaningful, but it is not the film’s principal storyline; the plot centers on Buzz Lightyear’s mission.
Rank #4
Representation and audience: Common Sense Media includes the film in its LGBTQ+ movie list and recommends it for ages 6+. A 2024 study catalogs Alisha Hawthorne and Ms. Hawthorne in its discussion of Disney films. The evidence supports identifying their presence, but not treating their role as equivalent in centrality to a film led by a queer protagonist. Lightyear is a feature connected to the wider Toy Story franchise.
5. The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)
Why it ranks here: This action-packed family adventure offers an energetic, accessible pick for viewers who want comedy and spectacle. Common Sense Media includes it in its LGBTQ+ film list and describes it as a family adventure, but the available evidence here does not verify the exact nature or explicitness of its character representation.

Best Value
- 824355807424
Representation and audience: Treat this as a broadly recommended animated feature with LGBTQ+ relevance noted by a family-media guide, not as a film whose queer character details are established by the cited material. Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 8+. The feature is a standalone story.
6–12. More titles require stronger verification
A ranked list should not reach twelve by treating a brief cameo, a fan interpretation, or an unverified title as equivalent to a clearly documented LGBTQ+ story. The evidence available for this article establishes five feature films, with different degrees of centrality and certainty. It does not support naming seven additional films responsibly, so this list stops at five rather than inventing or padding entries.

A 2024 peer-reviewed study by Mª Luisa Cárdenas-Rica catalogued LGBTQ+ characters in Disney animated content. In that study’s catalog, “Only 15% of these characters are main characters, and 18% are secondary characters while supporting and minor characters make up 67%.” The same study reports that 37% were unnamed or anonymous. These figures describe the study’s own Disney-focused cataloguing, not all animated films or the animation industry as a whole.
The study also distinguishes characters Disney identified from characters the author classified without Disney identifying them. That difference is important: official confirmation, what a film makes explicit, and what viewers infer are separate kinds of evidence. A catalog entry should not be presented as proof that every identity is stated onscreen.
Choosing a film for your next watch
- For a contemporary fantasy feature: Choose Nimona.
- For animation rooted in real-life testimony and migration: Choose Flee.
- For a family adventure with queer representation in a supporting role: Consider Strange World or Lightyear, with the age and content guidance above.
- For fast-paced family comedy: Consider The Mitchells vs. the Machines, while keeping the limits of the available character-specific evidence in mind.
