“Turkey in a Can,” Bob’s Burgers season 4, episode 5, makes a strong case for the series’ greatest Thanksgiving episode. Bob’s three-day turkey brine becomes the center of an absurd sabotage mystery, while Gene and Tina get Thanksgiving stories of their own. Calling it the greatest Thanksgiving episode in sitcom history is a critic’s judgment, not an established cross-sitcom consensus.
What happens in “Turkey in a Can”?
Bob prepares a turkey for Thanksgiving with a three-day brine. Then someone keeps putting the bird in the toilet. Bob’s determination to protect the centerpiece turns the holiday preparation into a mystery whose stakes are ridiculous and, to him, completely serious. The Bob’s Credits episode guide and CableTV’s episode guide both describe the brined turkey and sabotage plot.
The episode also follows Gene as he tries to write a Thanksgiving carol with Linda and Aunt Gayle, and Tina as she tries to prove she belongs at the adults’ table. Those parallel stories give the episode more than one comic register: Bob’s increasingly exasperated investigation is the engine, while the children’s attempts to participate make the holiday feel like a family occasion rather than a one-joke setup.
Why it makes such a persuasive case for best
Bob’s holiday devotion meets a gloriously silly problem
Bob cares deeply about getting Thanksgiving right. The contrast between that sincerity and the sheer indignity of a turkey repeatedly ending up in the toilet is the episode’s central pleasure. The joke works because the turkey matters to Bob—not because the show treats his care as foolish. His seriousness gives the absurdity its shape.

The mystery keeps the family comedy moving
The repeated sabotage gives the story a clear question to follow: who is doing this, and why? That framework lets Bob’s frustration build while the episode keeps returning to the family’s distinct holiday concerns. The result is both a running gag and a character-focused story, rather than a string of disconnected Thanksgiving jokes.
The side stories make the holiday feel shared
Gene’s carol-writing effort and Tina’s bid for a place among the adults broaden the episode’s view of Thanksgiving. They are not just extra jokes around Bob’s turkey crisis; they show the children trying to make their own mark on the family gathering. That balance is a good reason to champion the episode even while acknowledging that another installment may be a better ensemble showcase.

Is it the best Bob’s Burgers Thanksgiving episode?
That depends on what a viewer wants from a holiday episode. “Turkey in a Can” is a compelling pick for a story built around Bob’s character, a memorable escalating gag, and a family-sized mix of comedy and feeling. But it is not an uncontested winner even within the show.
In a ranking published November 22, 2023, ComicBook.com’s Nick Valdez placed “Turkey in a Can” second among the series’ Thanksgiving episodes, behind “Dawn of the Peck.” Valdez praised the former’s attention to Bob, its emotional depth, Teddy’s moments, and its chaotic toilet climax. He favored “Dawn of the Peck” for its ensemble use, town interactions, and broader comic mayhem. Those are one critic’s criteria, not an audience poll or an objective score. Does it deserve “greatest in sitcom history”?
As a spirited opinion, the claim is easy to defend: “Turkey in a Can” turns a small, specific family ritual into an unusually memorable comic mystery, and its subplots give the holiday more emotional texture than the premise alone promises. As a factual ranking, though, “greatest in sitcom history” goes further than the evidence supports. The available comparison is a ranking of Bob’s Burgers Thanksgiving episodes, not a cross-sitcom survey or comprehensive ranking.
That distinction does not diminish the episode. It simply clarifies what “untouchable” means here: a viewer’s emphatic verdict about a favorite, not a proven consensus. A fan who prefers “Dawn of the Peck” for its larger ensemble may reasonably choose that one instead.

Where to find the episode and a related book
Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time. CableTV’s guide named Hulu and said seasons 1–13 were available there when its page was prepared, but that does not establish current availability. Check the listings for your region before watching.
For a show-and-food companion, Penguin Random House describes The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book as a 128-page cookbook by Loren Bouchard and the show’s writers, published February 2, 2021, with 75 burgers from the series and episode references. It is a general companion to the show, not a documented source for the turkey brine in “Turkey in a Can.”
