Salem’s Halloween season is less about sights that vanish after October than about what gathers there then: a month-long festival, costumed crowds, markets, performances and a packed calendar. In 2026, the city is also marking its 400th anniversary with two announced Halloween-season highlights. Here are 11 experiences to look for—and what to check before you go.
1. Haunted Happenings across the city
Salem Haunted Happenings runs October 1–31, with events across the city. Its annual program includes the Grand Parade, artisan vendors, family-friendly activities, costume balls, ghost tours, haunted houses, live music and theatrical presentations. The festival began in 1982; Haunted Happenings says its first year welcomed around 50,000 visitors and that more than 1 million people travel to Salem each October today. 2. The Grand Parade

For Salem’s 400th-anniversary year, Destination Salem announced a special attempt to gather hundreds or even thousands of witch-hat wearers along the waterfront. The same announcement says the month-long festival will culminate on Halloween night with a 400-drone show over the North River commemorating Salem’s 400th anniversary. It is a planned highlight for 2026, so check the latest official updates for timing and any changes.

10. Ghost tours and chilling performances
Ghost tours and theatrical presentations are part of Haunted Happenings’ official festival description. The 2026 calendar includes dated events such as Eerie Stories: Haunting Legends of the North Shore and the Salem Haunted Magic Show. The Salem Witch Museum is a standing attraction, not a sight that exists only during Halloween, but its October schedule is useful for planning amid the festival’s many events.
