There is no official, fixed Elon Musk reading list of exactly 11 books. This is a selected list of 11 titles that secondary sources associate with his reading, recommendations, or public comments. The evidence varies: some titles have a clear attributed statement, some come through reporting, and two are identified by a secondary compilation without a direct quote established here. Treat the categories below as a guide for choosing what to read, not as Musk’s own classification.

The strongest documented associations in the reviewed sources include Foundation and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The other selections broaden the list across science fiction, biography, engineering, business, and artificial intelligence. A mention of a book is not automatically an endorsement.

What books does Elon Musk recommend?

The 11 titles below are an evidence-conscious selection, not a definitive inventory of everything Musk has read or recommended. Cristina Mella’s compilation explains that it checks interviews, transcripts, reports, and posts, distinguishes direct quotations from reported claims, and was last verified on August 17, 2026. A separate synthesis also cautions that online lists vary widely and may include loosely attributed titles. The attribution label for each book indicates how cautiously to read its connection to Musk.

Science fiction and imagined futures

Foundation — Isaac Asimov

Attribution: direct post reproduced by a secondary source. Mella’s compilation reproduces Musk’s statement: “Foundation Series & Zeroth Law are fundamental to creation of SpaceX.” The comment connects Asimov’s series and its Zeroth Law to the creation of SpaceX; it is not a claim that the novels are an engineering manual.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — Douglas Adams

Attribution: direct statement reproduced by a secondary source. Mella’s compilation attributes this comment to Musk: “Our AI, Grok, is modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which is one of my favorite books.” The compilation points to the Lex Fridman Podcast #400 transcript for a separate recorded discussion. That makes the book an especially clear favorite-book association in the material reviewed.

The Culture series — Iain M. Banks

Attribution: quotation reproduced by a secondary source. Mella’s compilation quotes Musk describing the series as a “Compelling picture of a grand, semi-utopian galactic future” and expressing hope that it is not too optimistic about AI. The series is a natural choice for readers interested in speculative societies and artificial intelligence, rather than a single standalone title.

Biography and historical example

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin — Benjamin Franklin

Attribution: reported interview discussion. Mella’s compilation says that in a 2012 interview Musk described reading few general business books and turning instead to biographies and autobiographies, citing Franklin as an example of a self-made person he admired. The source reports the reasoning rather than presenting a direct quotation; it also notes that the interview captions are auto-generated.

Benjamin Franklin: An American Life — Walter Isaacson

Attribution: reported interview discussion. The same compilation reports that Musk named Isaacson’s biography alongside Franklin’s autobiography and called it very good. This is a useful pairing for readers who want Franklin’s own account alongside a modern biographical treatment, but the attribution remains reported rather than a direct transcript quotation in the reviewed material.

Engineering and rocket science

Structures: Or Why Things Don’t Fall Down — J. E. Gordon

Attribution: recommendation quoted through reporting. Mella’s compilation reproduces the line, “It’s really, really good if you want a primer on structural design,” and traces it to Inc. reporting rather than a direct Musk transcript. Gordon’s book is the clearest fit on this list for readers seeking an accessible introduction to how structures carry loads and why they fail.

Ignition!: An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants — John D. Clark

Attribution: reported reading-list entry. The compilation reports this as one of Musk’s self-education texts on propulsion, based on Inc. coverage. A separate reading-list synthesis also includes it. The evidence supports describing it as a reported association, not presenting a direct endorsement or a claim that it is suitable as a current technical handbook.

Business and strategy

Zero to One — Peter Thiel

Attribution: statement reproduced from reporting. Mella’s compilation gives this wording, traced to Inc. reporting: “Peter Thiel has built multiple breakthrough companies and Zero to One shows how.” The association is relevant to readers interested in entrepreneurship and building new businesses; the wording is not a guarantee that the book’s advice applies to every venture.

Destined for War — Graham Allison

Attribution: direct statement reproduced by a secondary source. Mella’s compilation attributes this remark to Musk: “It’s worth reading that book on the, difficult to pronounce, the Thucydides Trap.” Allison’s book examines the risk of conflict when a rising power challenges an established one. This is a reported recommendation to read the book, not evidence that Musk endorses every argument in it.

Artificial intelligence and the future

Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies — Nick Bostrom

Attribution: listed by a secondary synthesis. Read Faster includes Bostrom’s book among frequently cited AI-related recommendations associated with Musk. The reviewed material does not establish a direct quote from Musk about this title, so it is best treated as a cautious list association rather than a confirmed, verbatim recommendation.

Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence — Max Tegmark

Attribution: listed by a secondary synthesis. Read Faster includes Tegmark’s book among AI-related titles associated with Musk, but the material reviewed here does not establish a direct quote. Its presence on this selection therefore carries less attribution weight than the quoted or reported entries above.

How many books does Elon Musk recommend?

No fixed total is established. The number 11 here describes this article’s selection, not an official list or a count of every book Musk recommends. The two secondary compilations reviewed describe different scopes—one says it verified 21 titles, while another discusses a core set of roughly a dozen and notes that broader online lists can reach 50 or more loosely attributed entries. Those are descriptions of compilations, not statistics about Musk’s reading habits.

Which book should you start with?

Choose according to what you want from the list, and weigh the attribution label alongside the subject. For a strong, quotable association and imaginative science fiction, start with Foundation or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. For speculative AI futures, consider Banks’s Culture series; for engineering, Gordon’s Structures; for propulsion history, Clark’s Ignition!. Readers drawn to biography can compare Franklin’s autobiography with Isaacson’s biography, while Zero to One and Destined for War address business and geopolitics respectively. For Bostrom and Tegmark, remember that the source trail here is a secondary compilation rather than a direct statement.
