There is no objective, permanent “best” list: critics’ scores, filmmaking, historical influence, conservation themes and subject variety all produce different answers. The titles below are a curated watchlist rather than a new 1-to-100 ranking, spanning wildlife spectacles, ecosystems, and films about people’s impact on nature. It includes both feature films and multi-episode series, so check the format before choosing what to watch.
How to use this nature documentary watchlist
“Nature documentary” covers more than animal footage. It can mean natural-history series, intimate wildlife films, stories about human relationships with animals, and documentaries focused on environmental damage or conservation. A one-sitting feature and a multi-episode series also offer different kinds of viewing.
The selection below draws on titles discussed in Rotten Tomatoes’ 100 Best Nature Documentaries of All Time, a guide published by Alex Vo on April 20, 2023, and on major works covered by National Geographic Traveller (UK) in its guide updated May 8, 2026. Rotten Tomatoes says its 100 titles are ranked by Tomatometer score, with Certified Fresh films first. That is one published ranking—not a definitive consensus—and a critic score does not establish scientific accuracy or timeless quality. The watchlist here groups recommendations by viewing interest rather than reproducing that score order.
The two source guides also show why the form resists a single definition. Rotten Tomatoes includes films about wildlife and environmental harm as well as human relationships with nature; National Geographic Traveller’s examples range across landmark natural-history series and a feature about ocean life and human effects. The PBS science and nature documentary discovery page is another place to explore the broadcaster’s subject area, though it is not a title-by-title ranking.

Start with landmark natural-history series
Planet Earth, Planet Earth II and Planet Earth III
For a broad introduction to habitats and wildlife, begin with the Planet Earth series. National Geographic Traveller reports that the first series broadcast in 2006 and Planet Earth II followed ten years later. It says Planet Earth III covers more than 43 countries over five years. Those production details make the trilogy a useful choice when you want a sweeping, place-spanning natural-history experience rather than a single-species story.
Blue Planet and Blue Planet II
The Blue Planet installments, from 2001 and 2017, focus on marine life and human effects on the oceans, according to National Geographic Traveller. Choose them for an ocean-centered counterpart to terrestrial wildlife series, with the subject extending from marine habitats to pressures caused by people.

Choose a feature film for a single sitting
Ocean with David Attenborough
National Geographic Traveller says Ocean with David Attenborough was released on May 8, 2025, his 99th birthday. The feature explores ocean habitats, human effects and protection efforts. It is a strong choice if you want a focused marine documentary rather than a multi-episode series. The publication also notes an accompanying book, Oceans: Earth’s Last Wilderness, by David Attenborough and Colin Butfield; check the current edition and availability before seeking it out.
Wildlife films with a close-up focus
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide names Winged Migration, March of the Penguins, Bears, Chimpanzee, Oceans, Under the Sea and Born to Be Wild among its examples. These films offer different entry points into animal life, from migration and marine settings to particular species and relationships. Treat the list as a set of candidates, not a quality order: the guide’s own overall ranking is based on Tomatometer scores.

Films where nature and human lives meet
For stories centered on people as well as animals or places, Rotten Tomatoes points to The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, All That Breathes, Kedi and Stray. The guide also names Touching the Void, Free Solo and Fire of Love in its broader discussion of documentaries connected to nature. These examples show how the boundary can widen to include human encounters with the natural world; they are not all conventional wildlife films.

If you want a documentary that foregrounds human influence rather than presenting nature primarily as spectacle, Rotten Tomatoes’ introductory discussion names Blackfish, The Cove, Food, Inc., Honeyland, An Inconvenient Truth and GasLand. The subjects and approaches differ, but they broaden a watchlist beyond wildlife observation to questions of environmental harm, food systems and conservation.
