In a 2017 anniversary interview, director Imtiaz Ali described Kareena Kapoor’s Geet Dhillon as an idea-filled, impulsive young woman—and singled out her painful Shimla exchange with Aditya as the strongest scene between them. In a separate interview, he called their final reunion the film’s most romantic scene. Those are distinct descriptions, not competing claims to one definitive favourite.
What Imtiaz Ali said about Geet
In Scroll’s October 24, 2017 feature marking the film’s tenth anniversary, Ali said his brief for Kareena Kapoor was more specific than simply making Geet talkative. He imagined her constantly coming up with ideas she believed could save humanity, then needing to share them immediately. As he put it, “While in her sleep, she is still thinking of an idea to save humanity.” Read the Scroll interview.
That boundless confidence is what makes Geet’s later silence so striking. Ali described her trip to Manali to meet Anshuman (Tarun Arora) as naive and immature. After Anshuman rejects her, she remains in Shimla, works as a schoolteacher and becomes withdrawn: her certainty has collapsed, and she no longer resembles the bright person Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) first met.
Why the Shimla confrontation stood out
When Aditya finds Geet in Shimla, she tries to make him leave. Ali interpreted the scene as Geet’s attempt to protect the image Aditya has of her: she does not want him to see how diminished she feels. The exchange is therefore not just a quarrel; it shows the distance between the lively Geet he remembers and the woman who has lost faith in herself.

Ali called it “the strongest scene between the two,” recalling Aditya’s response: “Do you have any more mean things to say to me?” In the Scroll feature, that is the scene most directly tied to the headline’s question about Ali’s standout moment.
Why the final reunion has a different distinction
In a separate 2017 conversation with The Quint, Ali called Geet and Aditya’s final reunion the “most romantic scene.” He described Geet returning to Aditya, choosing to be with him and embracing him in a cathartic ending. That wording identifies a different quality from the Shimla scene’s strength: one is the emotional confrontation between them; the other is the romantic release at the end.

Ali also recalled that filming the reunion was difficult because a beehive hung above Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. In his account, bees had already stung two or three members of the unit. This is Ali’s recollection in the interview, not an independently verified production record. Read The Quint interview.
What Ali imagined for Geet after the ending
In a 2017 Indian Express interview, Ali speculated that Geet might plan a honeymoon and eventually discover that her expressiveness could overwhelm Aditya. But he said he did not want to make a sequel: “I don’t want to because I don’t want Geet to compromise.” This was his thought experiment about the characters, not a continuation established as part of the film’s story. The film’s anniversary and Ali’s approach
Jab We Met opened on October 26, 2007; its tenth anniversary fell on October 26, 2017, two days after Scroll published its retrospective. In a separate Indian Express/IANS interview, Ali said he had not thought of the film as a romantic one while making it, despite the way audiences described it. He emphasized naturalness, saying artificiality could quickly feel redundant. “Keeping it pure is very essential in order for it to be remembered,” he said. Read the Indian Express/IANS interview.
