They are unusual examples—not a measured ranking, and not proof that the moves are absent from WWE today.
What “rarest” means here
There is no frequency dataset behind a definitive ranking of WWE’s rarest moves. The clearest basis is WWE’s November 28, 2012 historical feature, which described 15 maneuvers as long absent; a separate WWE feature published May 8, 2014 covered nine rare submission holds. Both are editorial snapshots from their publication dates, not current counts of match appearances. The selection below balances different kinds of moves and the historical detail WWE gives about them.
Ten unusual WWE moves
1. Sugar Hold
WWE describes the Sugar Hold as a full nelson transition that turns an opponent face-down while pressure is applied to the upper back. The hold’s origins are unclear; WWE says it may have been invented by Stu Hart. It became less common as other submissions gained prominence, though Stevie Richards briefly revived a version called the Rat Trap.
2. Stump Puller
In WWE’s description, the attacker sits on a seated opponent’s neck and pulls the opponent’s legs overhead. WWE associates the move with Big Bully Busick and Doink the Clown, and says it had disappeared by the mid-1990s.

3. Asiatic Spike
The Asiatic Spike is presented as thumb pressure applied at a point on the throat. WWE traces Terry Gordy’s learning of the hold to Killer Khan in Japan and also names Don Muraco and Meng as users. Those descriptions belong to wrestling history and presentation; they should not be read as medical guidance about pressure points.
4. Discus Punch
Kerry Von Erich’s discus background informed the spinning punch WWE calls the Discus Punch. Its appeal depended on the rotation and timing, and WWE says later competitors attempted the move without Von Erich’s mastery. That makes it a good example of a maneuver whose distinctiveness came not just from its name but from the performer’s execution.

5. Heart Punch
The Heart Punch is a straight punch to the chest. WWE associates it with Stan Stasiak and Ox Baker, and says Crush was the last WWE competitor to use it when he returned in 1996. WWE also states that there is no evidence for the legend that Ox Baker killed two competitors with the move; that story should not be repeated as fact.
6. Vertebreaker
WWE credits Shane Helms with developing the Vertebreaker in 2001. The attacker drops while holding an opponent across the shoulders, bringing the opponent down onto the neck area. WWE’s historical feature said The Hurricane used it occasionally and that it had not appeared in WWE for a long time as of that article’s publication. That is a dated observation, not a claim about present-day use.

7. Airplane Spin
A wrestler carries an opponent across the shoulders and spins to disorient them. WWE calls the Airplane Spin a former staple and recounts Gorilla Monsoon using it on Muhammad Ali. Its visually simple premise demands the performer maintain control while rotating with an opponent’s weight.
8. Tarantula
WWE identifies the Tarantula as a rope-hung Boston Crab associated with Yoshihiro Tajiri. Joey Styles, identified by WWE as an original ECW announcer, explained that the hold was not designed to force a submission: “The hold doesn’t bend the opponent’s spine far enough against its natural range of motion to cause a submission,” he said, adding that it could cause pain and leave the back weakened for the rest of a match. That is a commentator’s wrestling explanation, not a clinical assessment. Under WWE rules as described in the feature, the hold had to be released by five and could not win a match.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
9. Indian Deathlock
The Indian Deathlock entangles the opponent’s legs and uses leverage to apply pressure. WWE says Triple H used it early in his career and brought it back at WrestleMania XIX against Booker T. Its occasional return to a prominent match makes it a useful reminder that an uncommon move can reappear without becoming a regular feature.
10. Stomach Claw
Killer Kowalski used the Stomach Claw against Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, and Gorilla Monsoon, according to WWE; the Von Erich family later used a variation on the abdomen. WWE quoted Gerald Brisco on Kowalski’s confidence in the hold: “Kowalski believed in the claw,” he said. “He believed you weren’t going to get out of it. And after he hooked it on you, you believed you weren’t gonna get out of it.”

Why the list is not a current ranking
Moves can fade because styles change, because a move is constrained by match rules, or because a particular performer’s version is hard to reproduce convincingly. WWE’s historical account gives examples of all three: it says other submissions displaced the Sugar Hold, describes the Tarantula’s five-count restriction, and ties the Discus Punch’s impact to Kerry Von Erich’s skill. Those explanations help put the moves in context, but they do not establish how often any maneuver appears in WWE matches now.
Rarity also should not be confused with danger. WWE has separately published a feature on high-risk finishers, but its historical move lists do not establish medical effects for the techniques described here. For visual context, WWE’s “15 wrestling moves that time forgot” video playlist is a viewing route, although access can vary by region.
