Blair Marnell’s January 8, 2025, Digital Trends ranking put The Last of Us first, followed by Daredevil: Born Again and Andor season two. It is an editorial selection—not a poll or a current popularity chart—and mixes brand-new series with returning seasons. The entries below preserve Marnell’s original order and explain the hooks he highlighted at the time.
How to read this 2025 ranking
The list reflects one writer’s editorial choices, not a shared scoring formula: the ranking did not measure every show against a single set of criteria. Its appeal spans franchise familiarity, casts, creative teams, genres, and the stories each series promised to tell. Release dates and schedules below are what Digital Trends reported on January 8, 2025; they are historical forecasts, not a guide to what is streaming now. Availability can vary by territory and change over time.
The list also leaned heavily on HBO, which had four entries, and Disney+, which had two. NBC, Netflix, FX, and Apple TV+ each had one.
The 10 most anticipated TV shows of 2025, ranked
-
The Last of Us — HBO
Marnell ranked the adaptation of the video game first, pointing to the changed relationship between Joel and Ellie and the arrival of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and Dina, played by Isabela Merced. Jeffrey Wright was also set to return as Isaac Dixon. The January article described a seven-episode season scheduled for April 2025 and connected its story to The Last of Us Part II.

-
Andor season 2 — Disney+

Suits: L.A. — NBC
The spinoff raised the question of whether the success of Suits could be repeated. Stephen Amell and Josh McDermitt were named as its new leads, with Gabriel Macht expected to appear in a recurring or guest capacity. The ranking listed February 23, 2025, as its premiere date.
How this editorial list differs from IMDb’s audience signal
IMDb published a separate 2025 anticipation signal on January 2, 2025. Its annual lists use IMDbPro MOVIEmeter weekly rankings, which IMDb says draw on actual page views from more than 250 million monthly visitors worldwide. Its new-series list began with Daredevil: Born Again, Alien: Earth, and It: Welcome to Derry. Those rankings measure attention to IMDb pages, not surveyed excitement or anticipated enjoyment, and they separate new series from returning shows rather than forming the same kind of combined editorial top ten.
For a different snapshot of what networks and streamers said was coming, Disney’s July 8, 2025 slate listed FX’s Alien: Earth for August 12, Only Murders in the Building season five without a date in that slate, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians season two for December. Netflix’s January 30 announcement said Squid Game’s final season would debut June 27 and that Stranger Things and Wednesday were returning during 2025. Its October 16 Tudum guide is a later retrospective schedule source. These are company statements made at the time, not confirmation of present-day regional streaming access. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in the January announcement, “With more than 700 million people watching, we can’t just be one thing. We need to be the best version of everything”; that is company positioning, not evidence for any show’s place in an anticipation ranking.
