This selection weighs historical visibility, documented popularity, distinctive play and cultural staying power, while noting when the evidence comes from UK awards, US sales reports or museum accounts. The list spans puzzles, dolls, action figures and plush characters—many of them tied to cartoons, films or other entertainment.
10 memorable toys of the 1980s
The order is editorial, not a sales ranking. The evidence also varies: an award, a reported sales total and a shopping craze are different measures of popularity, and the figures below should not be compared as if they came from one dataset.
-
Rubik’s Cube
Invented in 1974 by Hungarian Ernő Rubik as the Magic Cube, the puzzle went on sale in the UK in 1978 and received a worldwide release two years later, according to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The UK Toy Retailers Association (TRA) named it Toy of the Year in both 1980 and 1981. The TRA also says more than 100 million puzzles sold from 1980 through 1982; that is a period-specific figure, not a worldwide lifetime total. The V&A describes it as the world’s most sold puzzle game.
-
Care Bears
Created by Elena Kucharik for American Greetings, the Care Bears began as greeting-card characters in 1981 and grew into a broad franchise of plush toys, miniatures, cartoons, films and other merchandise. The V&A reports that more than 40 million plush toys sold during the franchise’s peak from 1983 through 1987. Their instantly recognizable characters made them a defining example of the decade’s character-driven plush toys.

-
Masters of the Universe: He-Man
Mattel created the Masters of the Universe franchise in 1983. Its toys were supported by an animated series, comics and a feature film; the V&A notes that the cartoon also helped advertise the toys. The TRA’s UK awards named Masters of the Universe Toy of the Year in 1984. This combination of fantasy figures, storytelling and screen promotion made He-Man one of the decade’s most visible action-toy worlds.
-
My Little Pony
Launched in 1982, My Little Pony expanded from collectible figures into a franchise with animated series and a feature film. The V&A reports that more than 150 million ponies sold between the 1982 launch and 1990—not just during the 1980s alone. The TRA describes the smaller My Little Pony as a scaled-down successor to My Pretty Pony and identifies the line as a key girls’ toy.

Cabbage Patch Kids
Coleco first produced Cabbage Patch Kids in 1982. Their soft fabric bodies, plastic heads and individual adoption papers and birth certificates helped give each doll a distinctive identity. In the United States, demand became a major holiday shopping craze: HISTORY reports that the dolls reached stores in summer 1983 and all 2 million produced had sold by fall that year. The V&A also describes pre-Christmas buying riots in the US.
-
Transformers
Hasbro launched Transformers in 1984, pairing robots that changed into vehicles or other objects with comics and cartoons, according to the V&A. Optimus Prime became a signature character, and the TRA named Transformers its UK Toy of the Year in 1985 and 1986, noting shortages. HISTORY (2022), relaying figures attributed to the Associated Press, reports almost $950 million in Transformers sales across the 1980s, including $333 million in 1985. These are reported historical sales figures, not inflation-adjusted amounts or a present-day valuation.

Star Wars toys
Star Wars toys remained a major presence in UK shops into the mid-1980s. The TRA’s UK timeline lists the range as Toy of the Year and a top seller in both 1982 and 1983, before noting that its popularity waned. The toys’ place on this list reflects their continuing visibility in the decade’s early and middle years, rather than a claim that they stayed equally popular throughout the decade.
-
Sylvanian Families
For a distinctly different kind of play—and a useful UK-market counterpoint to US-centered toy crazes—Sylvanian Families arrived in 1987. The TRA records the line as its Toy of the Year in 1987, 1988 and 1989. The repeated award recognition makes the miniature animal-family range one of the decade’s notable UK toy successes.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Turtles began as a comic in 1984; their television series followed in 1987. The V&A describes Playmates action figures as reaching their peak in 1988, making the line a late-decade US phenomenon. The geography matters: the TRA’s UK timeline says the toys arrived in UK shops in 1990, so their US-era popularity should not be mistaken for a UK launch in the 1980s.
-
Ghostbusters toys
Ghostbusters brought a successful new toy range to the UK market in 1988, according to the TRA. Drawing on the popular film and animated series, the toys included play equipment such as proton packs and vehicles such as the Ecto-1. The range captures the decade’s close connection between screen entertainment and toys designed to extend its imaginary world.

What made 1980s toys stand out?
The decade’s signature toys offered markedly different ways to play: solving the Rubik’s Cube, collecting ponies or characters, staging fantasy battles with He-Man, transforming robots, or bringing screen-inspired adventures into the playroom. Many were also larger entertainment properties rather than isolated products. The V&A documents cartoons, films, comics or other merchandise alongside Care Bears, My Little Pony, He-Man and Transformers.
Popularity left different kinds of evidence. Rubik’s Cube and Masters of the Universe received TRA awards; the V&A gives multi-year sales totals for Care Bears plush and My Little Pony; Cabbage Patch Kids became associated with reported US shortages and shopping frenzies. Each tells a piece of the story, but none alone establishes a universal ranking of the decade’s toys.
