In 24/7 Tempo’s ratings-based ranking, The Hottie & the Nottie takes the top spot, followed by The Love Guru and All About Steve. The order is based on critic, audience and IMDb user ratings collected in February 2021—not a definitive or current measure of every romantic movie. “Worst” can also mean a troubling portrayal of love, which is a different judgment from poor reviews.
How this ranking defines “worst”
This list uses the first ten entries in 24/7 Tempo’s ranking of 20 romantic films. Its index combined Rotten Tomatoes critic ratings, Rotten Tomatoes audience ratings and IMDb user ratings. To qualify, a film needed at least 10 critic reviews and 5,000 audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, plus 10,000 IMDb user reviews. The publisher collected the data in February 2021, so the figures below are a dated snapshot rather than live scores. 24/7 Tempo’s ranking and methodology
That makes the order a transparent ratings-based selection, not an objective verdict on artistic quality. A separate question—whether a film depicts an unhealthy relationship—can produce a different list.

I Don’t Know How She Does It (2011)
Ranked tenth. The publisher reported 17% positive critic reviews and 32% positive audience reviews in its 2021 coverage. Source and dated ratings
Bad reviews are not the same as an unhealthy romance
A low aggregate score measures review reception under a particular method; it does not establish that a film’s relationship is harmful. Conversely, a story may portray unhealthy dynamics without being among the lowest-rated movies. Time Out’s February 2025 roundup asked psychologists, therapists and dating coaches to identify films and shows with unhealthy attitudes to love. It uses expert commentary, not the ratings index above, so its picks should not be added to this ranking as though they shared the same criteria. Time Out’s relationship-expert roundup
For example, Time Out placed Joker: Folie à Deux first among screen romances it considered unhealthy. Psychoanalyst and writer Anouchka Grose interpreted the central relationship as a shared fantasy in which “two people’s toxic ideas about themselves can reinforce each other.” That is Grose’s reading of a fictional relationship, not a clinical finding about viewers or a film-quality score. Time Out’s article and expert commentary
Quick Recap
How to use the list
- Read the order as a historical comparison of review aggregates collected in February 2021, not as a current ranking.
- Do not treat critic and audience percentages as objective measures of artistic merit; they summarize positive ratings under the source’s method.
- Use a relationship-dynamics list for a different question: what a film portrays about communication, mutuality or unhealthy behavior.
