HBO aired the episode on April 13, 2014; the anniversary story behind the “10 years ago” framing appeared on April 14, 2024.
What happens in “The Lion and the Rose”
Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell’s wedding festivities unfold at the Red Keep before the assembled court. During a confrontation with Tyrion, Joffrey begins choking. He dies in his mother Cersei’s arms, and his final gestures silently accuse Tyrion of poisoning him. Cersei has Tyrion arrested.
The abrupt turn is the episode’s central reversal: a lavish public celebration becomes a scene of panic, accusation and custody. The immediate suspicion directed at Tyrion launches the next stretch of the season, including his flight from the threat of execution, as described in Gizmodo’s April 14, 2024 anniversary account.
Why the episode still stands out
Joffrey’s death changes the direction of the story without resolving the crisis around it. The court has witnessed his collapse, Cersei has named Tyrion as the accused, and Tyrion is suddenly in immediate danger. That chain of events gives the episode consequences well beyond the wedding itself.

The celebratory framing of Joffrey’s downfall reflects the anniversary article’s irreverent stance toward the fictional antagonist; it should not be mistaken for evidence of a shared or measured audience consensus. The episode’s lasting dramatic force comes from the contrast between the public spectacle and the rapid shift to grief, suspicion and political peril.
Why “10 years ago” is rounded anniversary wording
“The Lion and the Rose” first aired on April 13, 2014. The anniversary article was published April 14, 2024—one day after the tenth calendar anniversary of that broadcast. Its headline uses the familiar rounded phrasing rather than marking the exact anniversary date.
