This ranking weighs performance, critical reception, craft, influence, entertainment value and the range of Cruise’s roles. It is an editorial selection, not a definitive consensus; Rotten Tomatoes orders films by Tomatometer, while BFI and Paramount+ offer their own curated lists for different purposes.

Magnolia (1999)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s ensemble drama gives Cruise one of his most revealing roles: Frank T.J. Mackey, a swaggering self-help celebrity whose certainty conceals old wounds. Cruise makes the character’s bravado both compelling and uncomfortable, then lets it fracture. Choose this if you want a demanding drama and a performance far removed from the polished action-hero persona.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
The sixth Mission: Impossible film is the franchise at its most finely engineered: elaborate set pieces build on one another, while Christopher McQuarrie keeps the mission’s shifting loyalties easy to follow. Cruise’s physical commitment matters, but so does the film’s steady command of pace and geography. It is the strongest pick here for a big, tightly constructed action thriller.
-
Rain Man (1988)
As Charlie Babbitt, a self-centered hustler who discovers he has an autistic older brother, Cruise charts a gradual change from opportunism toward care. The road-movie structure gives the relationship room to develop, and Dustin Hoffman’s performance makes the pairing its center of gravity. This is the choice for a character-led drama rather than a showcase for Cruise alone.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
This sequel turns a familiar star persona into the subject of the story: Maverick is still gifted and instinctive, but now must teach a younger team and face the cost of his independence. Its aerial sequences make unusually clear use of scale and movement, while the emotional thread gives the spectacle a reason to matter. Start here for an accessible, crowd-pleasing film that also reflects on legacy.
-
Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
Oliver Stone’s antiwar drama follows Ron Kovic from patriotic idealism through injury and disillusionment to political activism. Cruise’s performance is a sustained transformation, built around the character’s anger, vulnerability and search for purpose. It is an intense watch and one of the clearest demonstrations that his dramatic range extends well beyond action and romance.

-
Collateral (2004)
Michael Mann casts Cruise against type as Vincent, a contract killer who forces a Los Angeles cabdriver to take him from job to job through the night. His cool restraint makes the threat more unnerving than a louder performance would, and the nocturnal city becomes part of the film’s tension. Choose it for a sleek, compact crime thriller and a different kind of Cruise menace.
-
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
In this science-fiction action film, Cruise plays a public-relations officer pushed into a war against an alien force, only to relive the same disastrous day. The repetition is more than a gimmick: each reset changes what the character knows and how he behaves. Emily Blunt’s co-lead helps give the story its sharp, combative energy. It is a smart choice for viewers who want inventive action with a strong comic streak.

Jerry Maguire (1996)
Cameron Crowe’s romantic comedy-drama puts Cruise in the role of a sports agent whose moral awakening costs him the easy security of his career. He balances charm with insecurity as Jerry tries to build a more honest life and relationship. This is the most natural starting point for viewers who want romance, humor and a star performance that leans on emotional openness.
-
Minority Report (2002)
Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller imagines a police system that arrests people before crimes occur. Cruise plays the officer whose faith in that system collapses when he is accused of a future murder. The premise drives a propulsive chase, but the film’s lasting appeal is the unease beneath its technology: what does justice mean when prediction is treated as proof? Choose it for cerebral, high-concept suspense.

Top Gun (1986)
The original Top Gun is a defining early Cruise vehicle: a cocky naval aviator’s rivalry, friendships and romance unfold against the sleek spectacle of fighter jets. Its style and soundtrack helped make it a major piece of 1980s pop culture. The British Film Institute reported that sales of the Ray-Ban sunglasses worn in Risky Business rose by 2,000%; it did not provide the underlying sales methodology or measurement year, so that figure is best understood as the institute’s reported claim, not proof that the film alone caused the increase. Pick Top Gun for the origin of the screen persona that later films would complicate and revisit.
How to choose a starting point
- For a pure action night: Mission: Impossible – Fallout or Top Gun: Maverick.
- For a dramatic performance: Magnolia or Born on the Fourth of July.
- For science fiction: Edge of Tomorrow for momentum, or Minority Report for a more unsettling premise.
- For romance or comedy: Jerry Maguire.
- For a darker thriller: Collateral.
The selection reflects a career that spans franchise action, science fiction, drama, romance and thriller roles. BFI’s 2025 fellowship coverage also describes Cruise’s work as a producer, a reminder that his influence is not limited to what happens in front of the camera. Different published lists answer different questions: Rotten Tomatoes ranks by Tomatometer, BFI curates essential films, and Paramount+ offers a studio-affiliated watchlist. None settles a single objective order; these ten are ranked for the balance of performance, filmmaking, influence and watchability.
