Danny McBride is best known for playing loud, self-defeating men, but his career is just as much about building the worlds around them. He is a writer, producer, director, and longtime collaborator whose HBO comedies move from a solitary former baseball player to rival school administrators to an entire family of televangelists. Here are 10 details that help explain how he got there.
How Danny McBride got started
1. He studied filmmaking, not acting
McBride enrolled in the School of Filmmaking at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. There he met aspiring writer-directors David Gordon Green and Jody Hill. A school rule that students cast one another in films helped put McBride in front of the camera: Green asked him to play Bust-Ass in All the Real Girls. McBride later described acting as beginning “as a lark,” rather than as the career he had set out to pursue. Backstage’s interview with McBride traces how that early collaboration helped establish a durable creative partnership.

2. His screen persona grew out of a filmmaking partnership
McBride’s performances are inseparable from the work he has done with Green and Hill. Their collaboration gave him a route from behind-the-scenes filmmaking into acting, while also letting him develop characters and stories with creative partners who knew his comic instincts. That mix of writing and performing became central to his later television work.

3. Kenny Powers made the antihero the center of the joke
In Eastbound & Down, McBride plays Kenny Powers, an egomaniacal former baseball pitcher. The character’s confidence routinely outruns his judgment, and the comedy comes from watching him collide with the consequences. Kenny is not simply a lovable rogue: his abrasiveness is part of the show’s design.

4. “Angry man trilogy” is a critic’s shorthand, not an official franchise
A 2022 Backstage profile described Kenny Powers, Neal Gamby, and Jesse Gemstone as a progression of difficult, “misunderstood” men, calling them an “angry man trilogy.” The phrase captures a recurring comic interest, but it is the interview’s description—not an official title for a connected series. McBride’s roles change with each show’s setting and cast.
5. Vice Principals shifts the focus to a rivalry
McBride plays Neal Gamby in Vice Principals, a comedy organized around school-administrator rivalry rather than one former athlete’s personal comeback. The change lets the show build its comedy through a relationship between antagonistic colleagues. McBride also added directing to his work on the series, according to Backstage.

6. The Righteous Gemstones expands the story into a family ensemble
In The Righteous Gemstones, McBride plays Jesse Gemstone, part of a family of wealthy televangelists. The show’s focus is broader than a single central antihero: family members, power struggles, and the world around the Gemstones all contribute to its story. McBride directed an episode in the show’s second season, as Backstage reported.
7. He has held several jobs on his signature shows
Penguin Random House’s biography identifies McBride as a writer, producer, and star of Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones. Those overlapping roles help explain why his career is not just a sequence of comic performances: he has helped shape the characters and stories he plays.

8. Childhood television helped shape his comic taste
In a 2025 interview with the Television Academy, McBride recalled planning his childhood television viewing around newspaper listings. He named programs including The Jeffersons, Diff’rent Strokes, What’s Happening!!, Cheers, and Family Ties, along with Saturday morning cartoons. He singled out Sherman Hemsley’s comic timing and said he gravitated toward characters who got angry and acted foolishly—a useful clue to the comic territory he later explored.
9. His church background informed Gemstones, but the show is not autobiography
The Associated Press reported in 2025 that McBride grew up in a devout Christian household in the South and that his mother led a puppet ministry. AP also reported that he later stopped attending church and remained interested in megachurches after moving to Charleston, South Carolina. These details offer context for his interest in the subject; they do not make the Gemstone family a literal portrait of his own life.

McBride told AP that he hoped religious viewers would understand the show was “not making fun of them,” but rather people they identify with and find annoying. He described its target as “hypocrites and people who were saying one thing and living another.” AP also quoted Yale religious and American studies professor Kathryn Lofton, who observed that “there’s not a lot of very positive depictions of evangelists in American media in the last 50 years.” The distinction matters: the satire is aimed at hypocrisy and public figures’ conduct, not faith as a whole. AP’s 2025 interview and report includes McBride’s comments and Lofton’s perspective.
10. His comedy can change genres—and he has published fiction
McBride has described The Righteous Gemstones as a show that could move among musical numbers, action, and straight comedy. In The Ringer’s 2025 oral history, he said the collaborators could “defy any sort of genre rules.” The publisher also lists his work as a writer and executive producer on the Halloween trilogy with David Gordon Green, alongside film appearances including Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Alien: Covenant, and Mitchells vs. The Machines. Penguin Random House identifies Thrilling Tales of Modern Men as McBride’s first short-story collection, another outlet for his writing beyond the screen.

Is The Righteous Gemstones finished?
Yes. The Television Academy’s April 16, 2025 article and AP’s April 30, 2025 report identify the fourth season as the series’ final season. That is the show’s reported historical status, not a teaser for a further season. The Television Academy’s season-four profile and AP’s report ahead of the finale describe it as the conclusion.
