Yungblud, born Dominic Harrison, grew up in Doncaster in a family he described as supportive and surrounded by music. In two 2020 interviews, he recalled being mocked at school for his appearance, feeling alone, and moving to London at 16 to study performing arts. These are ten points grounded in those interviews; personal memories are attributed to him rather than presented as independently verified records.
What Yungblud has said about growing up
-
Doncaster was his childhood home
Harrison grew up in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. In an interview with The Irish Times, he said, “I’m proud to be from Donny.” The Guardian also identifies Doncaster as his hometown. The Irish Times, 30 November 2020; The Guardian, 21 November 2020.

Music was part of his family life
Harrison said his father dealt in guitars, and the interviews report that his grandfather performed with T. Rex. The Guardian quotes him recalling: “My mum used to dye my hair when I was five and my dad was a guitar dealer so he’d seen it all.” The Guardian, 21 November 2020; The Irish Times, 30 November 2020.
-
His mother dyed his hair when he was five
In the Guardian interview, Harrison remembered his mother helping him experiment with his appearance at a young age. His recollection suggests that self-expression was welcomed at home, even as it later drew criticism at school. The Guardian, 21 November 2020.

He described his family as supportive
Both interviews portray home as a place where Harrison felt supported. The Irish Times contrasts that support with the criticism he encountered elsewhere; the Guardian also describes his family as backing him. That account coexists with his recollections of conflict between his parents, rather than erasing them. The Guardian, 21 November 2020; The Irish Times, 30 November 2020.

He recalled being mocked for his appearance at school
Harrison said classmates and teachers targeted his clothes. The Irish Times also describes him being mocked for expressive clothing and makeup. These are accounts in interviews published years after his school days, not contemporaneous school records. The Guardian, 21 November 2020; The Irish Times, 30 November 2020.

He recalled feeling alone despite having friends
Harrison described the loneliness he experienced as a young person: “I had a lot of friends but in a room full of people I would feel totally alone.” The quote captures his own account of his feelings; it should not be treated as a diagnosis. The Guardian, 21 November 2020.
-
He said his parents argued frequently
Harrison recalled frequent arguments at home and described the atmosphere as dark. He connected those experiences with how he came to think about love, and The Irish Times links that reflection to his song “Love Song.” This is his retrospective account, not an independently documented account of his parents’ relationship. The Guardian, 21 November 2020; The Irish Times, 30 November 2020.

He said he had suicidal thoughts at 13
In the Guardian interview, Harrison said he first had suicidal thoughts at 13. This is a sensitive personal recollection reported in 2020, not a clinical record. The Guardian, 21 November 2020.

He moved to London at 16 to attend ArtsEd
Both interviews report that Harrison moved from Doncaster to London at 16 to study at the performing arts school ArtsEd. His early performance experience included West End theatre
The Irish Times reports that he sang in the chorus of a West End production of Bugsy Malone. The interviews do not provide a complete dated chronology of this work, so it is best understood as context for his adolescence rather than a precisely placed childhood milestone. The Irish Times, 30 November 2020.

How to read these accounts
The details above come from interviews published in November 2020, in which Harrison looked back on growing up and adolescence. The two publications report several of the same details, but that overlap is not the same as independent verification of each childhood event. His own recollections are therefore presented as recollections, especially on school treatment, loneliness, mental health, and his parents’ arguments.
