Lady Gaga wore her famous meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, where she accepted Video of the Year. The outfit was made from beef, carried a rights-focused message she described as “I am not a piece of meat,” and later underwent extensive preservation work. Here are ten details that explain how the look was made, what it meant to Gaga, why it drew criticism, and what is documented about its museum history.
1. Gaga wore it to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards
On September 12, 2010, Gaga wore the dress while accepting the Video of the Year award. The moment joined an already attention-grabbing awards-night look with a major career milestone. The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times reported the date and award context.
2. Franc Fernandez and Nicola Formichetti were credited with the look
Designer Franc Fernandez made the dress, while stylist Nicola Formichetti worked on the look. Their roles are distinct: Fernandez was responsible for the garment, and Formichetti was the stylist associated with the outfit.
3. Later reporting identified the material as beef
Initial coverage was cautious about whether the meat was real. A contemporaneous Guardian report said the material was thought to be real but had not been confirmed. Later interviews with Fernandez and taxidermist Sergio Vigilato, along with museum accounts, described the garment as made from beef. The Washington Post reported Vigilato’s account that the dress itself used a dozen thin-cut flank steaks.

4. The outfit used tens of pounds of beef
Fernandez reportedly bought about 40 pounds of beef and used about 35 pounds for the dress and its matching accessories, according to 2011 reporting by the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. These are figures attributed to Fernandez in interviews, not independently audited weights. The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times also reported the estimate of a dozen flank steaks for the dress.
5. The dress came with matching meat accessories
The outfit included a hat, shoes, and purse made using beef, according to the later reporting. The purse became part of the awards-show tableau when Cher held it as Gaga accepted her award. The accessory helped make the look a full ensemble rather than a dress alone.

6. Gaga described it as a statement about rights
Gaga said the dress symbolized standing up for one’s rights, summing up its message as “I am not a piece of meat.” That is her stated explanation of the garment. TIME later connected the outfit to protest against the U.S. military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, a political framing that should be distinguished from Gaga’s quoted metaphor. The Washington Post and TIME reported those accounts.
7. Animal-rights advocates objected to the use of animal flesh
The look prompted criticism from animal-welfare advocates. The Guardian quoted PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk criticizing the use of meat, saying that “wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to elicit comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that more people are upset by butchery than are impressed by it.” That reaction appeared in the September 13, 2010 report, when the material’s authenticity was still unconfirmed. The Guardian’s contemporaneous coverage preserves both the criticism and that uncertainty.

8. Preservation began with ice, but the dress had already started to decompose
Taxidermist Sergio Vigilato said the garment had been kept on ice, but it began decomposing before it was frozen. Recalling the assignment, he said: “The first thing I asked was, ‘Where is the dress? This thing could have maggots by now.’” Vigilato reported that cleaning and preservation took more than a month. The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times covered his work.
9. The preserved display version was reconstructed and recolored
Preserving the object did not leave it exactly as it had been worn. Vigilato said the meat had to be reconditioned until it was semi-pliable, attached to a mannequin, and dyed dark red to evoke the original appearance. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described chemical treatment as part of the preservation. These are historical accounts of specialist conservation, not a recipe for treating meat at home.

10. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibited it in 2011
The documented museum chapter is the dress’s 2011 appearance in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame exhibition “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power.” A CBS/AP report covered the exhibit. CBS News reported on the display. The sources documenting that exhibition do not establish where the dress is now or whether it is currently accessible to the public.
