For your first Broadway show, buy through the production’s official ticket link or theatre box office, then verify the exact date, curtain time, seat location, running time, and any show-specific rules. Broadway details vary by production and venue, so the show’s current listing—not a general rule of thumb—is the best guide to your outing.
1. Buy tickets through an official channel
Start at Broadway.org, the Broadway League’s site, and follow the link for your chosen production to its authorized ticket office. The League says tickets can be bought online, by phone where offered, or at the theatre box office. It also says in-person box-office purchases have no additional service or handling fees; online and phone purchases may include fees. Check the production’s page for the correct seller and current box-office hours.
2. Compare the full ticket choice, not just the price
Prices and availability vary by production, performance, and seat. The League notes that hit shows and weekend nights may cost more, while upper mezzanine seats and flexibility about date or time can help when looking for a lower price. Many shows sell out, and desirable seats may be unavailable at the last minute, so buy early if a particular show, date, or location matters to you.
Before choosing between tickets, compare:
- Total price, including any fees.
- Performance date and curtain time.
- Section and exact seat location shown by the seller.
- Any restrictions or flexibility tied to a discount offer.
- Whether the location meets your access needs.
Rush, lottery, student, group, discount, and standing-room offers are not available for every show. Check the individual production page for current offers and terms rather than assuming a particular deal exists.

3. Understand Orchestra, Mezzanine, and other seat labels
Orchestra is the main floor; the Mezzanine is one level above it. Some theatres also have a Balcony, Box Seats, or Standing Room. These names describe locations, not a universal ranking: patrons have different preferences, and the available information does not establish sightline quality for every individual seat. Use the theatre’s seat map and listing for the exact location, and factor in stairs, aisle access, and other personal needs.
4. Confirm the exact performance date and time
Broadway does not follow one schedule that applies to every show. Many evening performances start around 8 p.m.; some begin at 7 p.m.; and matinees occur on selected days. Holiday schedules can differ. Follow the date and curtain time on your ticket and confirm them against the production’s current schedule before you go.

5. Check running time and intermission for your production
Look at the chosen show’s listing for its running time and whether it has an intermission. These are production-specific details, not a Broadway-wide standard. For example, a listing for Paranormal Activity gives a running time of 2 hours 10 minutes with one intermission; that example should not be used to estimate another show’s length. Use the current listing for the performance you booked when planning the rest of your evening.
6. Read the age advisory and entry rules
Age recommendations and entry rules differ from show to show. If you are bringing children, check the selected production’s current listing rather than relying on another show’s policy or a general idea of what is suitable. The Broadway show directory provides production-specific information.

7. Arrange accessibility with the theatre
If you need accessible seating or services, check both TheatreAccess.NYC and the chosen theatre’s page or ticket office. The Broadway League’s theatre information covers assistance for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons, blind and low-vision patrons, people who cannot climb stairs, patrons needing aisle or wheelchair seating, and people with developmental or cognitive disabilities. Confirm availability and arrangements directly with the venue before purchasing or attending.
8. Follow device rules while respecting access use
During the performance, do not text, call, take photos, or record. The Broadway League-linked guidance allows personal devices used for disability access and asks users to minimize screen brightness and disable sounds and vibration. It also reminds audiences that some disabilities are not visible and asks people to treat one another respectfully. If you are unsure whether a device or access setup is permitted, ask the theatre.

9. Check arrival and late-seating instructions for your venue
There is no single arrival buffer or late-seating policy established for every Broadway theatre. Allow enough time to follow the specific venue’s entry instructions, and check the theatre or show page for guidance about the performance you are attending. Do not assume a late arrival will be seated immediately or that another theatre’s policy applies.
10. Don’t assume there is a universal dress code
The available official guidance does not establish one dress code for all Broadway shows. Check the venue’s instructions if you have a specific concern; otherwise, choose clothing that suits your plans and allows you to be comfortable during the performance.
