Dylan Efron is Zac Efron’s younger brother, but his career began away from the spotlight: he studied economics, worked behind the scenes in film, and built a parallel interest in outdoor storytelling. His 2025 win on The Traitors made him more widely recognizable. Here are 10 details that show how those parts of his life connect.
1. He worked behind the camera before reality television
Before competing on television, Efron worked in film production. ABC’s 2025 contestant biography says his behind-the-scenes credits include American Sniper and A Star Is Born. The Trading Secrets episode description also lists crew work on Ready Player One, Unforgettable, Get Hard, and Jersey Boys.

2. He studied economics before changing direction
Efron studied economics at California Polytechnic State University and once pictured himself in a conventional office job, according to Teen Vogue. The Trading Secrets episode description characterizes his path as a move from economics into film, including a departure from a secure studio job.
3. He grew up exploring the outdoors with Zac
The brothers grew up in Arroyo Grande, a Central Coast town in California. Teen Vogue reports that their father took the family camping and backpacking, and that Dylan and Zac spent time exploring outdoors from a young age. Dylan recalled, “It was nice being able to grow up in California and get experience on our own out in the wild at a young age.”

4. He chose privacy while his brother became famous
As Zac’s career attracted public attention, Dylan says he preferred a quieter life. In Teen Vogue, he recalled, “I don’t think I had social media until I was 26.” The interview describes him as intentionally private while people were curious about Zac’s family.
5. He was a competitive game player long before The Traitors
The strategic competition on The Traitors was not his first experience with games of deception and tactics. Teen Vogue reports that he played Mafia, poker, and Settlers of Catan with friends as a child. “I was very competitive growing up,” he told the magazine.

6. Outdoor storytelling is part of his work, not just a hobby
ABC describes Efron as a producer, content creator, and outdoor enthusiast. He co-produced and co-starred in Down to Earth with Zac Efron, a travel and sustainability series. ABC’s 2025 biography also lists partnerships with Vuori, GoPro, YETI, Michelob ULTRA, and Columbia Sportswear; those are the partnerships named in that biography, not a guarantee of current arrangements.
7. He won The Traitors in 2025
Efron won the third season of The Traitors in 2025, according to ABC’s contestant biography. In a March 2025 interview with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, he described the moment viewers began recognizing him: “By Episode 5, they were like, ‘Oh, Dylan.’ I was like, ‘Oh, that is my name.’”

8. He had little dance experience before Dancing with the Stars
In a March 4, 2026 interview with EUPHORIA, Efron said joining Dancing with the Stars pushed him outside his comfort zone. He reached the final and finished fourth. Describing his motivation, he said, “I have no idea how to dance, but I can maybe have a growing experience where I can learn a new skill.”
9. He has produced documentaries about travel and conservation
ABC’s 2025 biography says Efron released The Village That Saved a Fish, a documentary about a Guyanese village working to protect an endangered species. ABC reported that the film surpassed 1 million views in its first week; the biography does not describe a separate measurement method. ABC also describes Down to Earth with Zac Efron as an Emmy-winning eco-travel series that premiered No. 1 globally, without publishing an audience figure or measurement methodology in the biography.

10. He has shared the practical items he packs for outdoor trips
In a June 16, 2025 Shop TODAY interview, Efron discussed travel and outdoor essentials including shoes, sunscreen, first-aid ointment, and Cortizone-10 Maximum Strength Itch Relief Cooling Spray. These are his reported packing preferences in that interview, not independent product-testing results or medical advice.
What Dylan Efron’s career shows
Dylan Efron’s public profile spans film crew work, outdoor and travel projects, documentaries, and competition television. Zac’s fame is part of the context, but Dylan’s own production experience and interest in the outdoors are central to the work he has pursued. His 2025 The Traitors win brought that story to a much larger audience.
