For a post-dinner watch, these ten shows offer very different versions of Thanksgiving: a family meal unraveling, a friendship ritual, a bird-attack spectacle, a supernatural interruption, and even a cross-town tour of holiday dinners. The picks below spotlight one episode per show, with titles and season numbers to make them easy to find. “Unforgettable” is a curated judgment, not a ranking.
Ten Thanksgiving episodes worth putting on your watchlist
1. Friends — “The One Where Ross Got High” (Season 6)
A Geller family dinner becomes a pressure cooker as old secrets surface, while Rachel’s attempt at a dessert adds an entirely different kind of disaster. It is a strong pick for escalating ensemble comedy: the meal keeps moving, but so does the pileup of revelations. The Television Academy’s Thanksgiving episode feature includes it among the show’s memorable holiday installments.
2. Bob’s Burgers — “Turkey in a Can” (Season 4)
Bob takes Thanksgiving seriously, so finding his carefully brined turkey in the toilet is more than a kitchen mishap: it becomes a baffling mystery. The episode’s joke is rooted in Bob’s devotion to the meal, which makes each new discovery land harder. Hulu’s Thanksgiving collection includes the show’s holiday episodes.
3. Cheers — “Thanksgiving Orphans” (Season 5)
When people with nowhere else to go gather for a potluck, an awkward holiday meal turns into one of television’s best-known food fights. The escalation is physical, chaotic, and still grounded in the idea that an improvised group can become a kind of family for the evening. The Television Academy features the episode in its Thanksgiving guide.

4. The Simpsons — “Bart vs. Thanksgiving” (Season 2)
Bart destroys Lisa’s Thanksgiving centerpiece, setting off a sibling fight that gives this animated episode its emotional core. The story does not treat the holiday as a perfect tableau; it lets hurt and anger take over before the siblings find a way back to one another. The Academy notes that it aired on Thanksgiving in 1990, and includes it in its episode selections.
5. Fresh Off the Boat — “Huangsgiving” (Season 2)
Jessica is determined to prove she can handle Thanksgiving, and the hosting effort produces kitchen trouble and family friction. Its appeal is the warm payoff beneath the mishaps: the holiday is not a test one person can ace so much as a family occasion that works because everyone is involved. The episode is among the Television Academy’s Thanksgiving picks.

6. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — “Talking Turkey” (Season 1)
After criticism from Will’s mother, Vivian puts the children to work preparing dinner. The result is kitchen chaos, with the comedy coming from a family suddenly expected to perform as a cooking team. For a lively, early-sitcom take on holiday labor and family pride, look for “Talking Turkey” in the Academy’s Thanksgiving episode list.
7. Gilmore Girls — “A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving” (Season 3)
Rory and Lorelai try to fit several Thanksgiving stops into one day, turning the episode into a talky, food-filled itinerary rather than a single meal gone wrong. That structure makes it a good contrast to the louder disaster comedies on this list: the pleasure is in the changing rooms, conversations, and plates. Netflix Tudum’s Thanksgiving episode guide also highlights it.

The Television Academy includes “Slapsgiving” in its Thanksgiving selections.
9. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — “Pangs” (Season 4)
Buffy hopes for a normal Thanksgiving dinner, but a supernatural disturbance gets in the way. The genre shift makes this a distinctive holiday watch, though the episode also engages with Indigenous history and representation; its themes deserve more attention than reducing them to a monster-of-the-week joke. The Television Academy lists it among its Thanksgiving episodes.

Why Thanksgiving TV has room for so many kinds of stories
The holiday can be a family obligation, a friendship ritual, a hosting challenge, or simply the reason a group of characters has to share a room. That range is visible across sitcoms, animation, family comedy, and supernatural farce in the Television Academy’s selection of Thanksgiving episodes.
Friends helped make the holiday a recurring television tradition after skipping it in its second season. In a Television Academy interview, co-creator and executive producer David Crane said, “I think we all have associations of painful family Thanksgivings — but there also exists this holiday where friends can be together and connect.” Co-creator and executive producer Marta Kauffman added, “At a certain point, We felt like Thanksgiving was ours.” Their comments help explain why holiday episodes can be about belonging as much as the meal itself.
