The Sandman is the wrestling persona of James Fullington, and his ECW identity was built as much around his entrance and connection with the crowd as his matches. WWE credits him with five ECW World title wins; his Singapore cane, rivalries and later appearances in WCW and WWE complete the story.
1. The Sandman was James Fullington
WWE’s official profile identifies The Sandman as James Fullington and associates him with Philadelphia. The same profile bills him at 6 feet 4 inches and 240 pounds; those are profile statistics, not independently measured figures.
2. He arrived in ECW as Mr. Sandman and became champion in 1992
Fullington joined Eastern Championship Wrestling in 1992 under the name Mr. Sandman. WWE’s career summary says he won his first ECW World title by defeating Don Muraco in November of that year. WWE credits him with five ECW World title wins overall and calls that total a record.
3. The character changed from a surfer presentation
The Sandman persona did not begin in the form most fans remember. The excerpt from The Rise & Fall of ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling traces the name to a bedding-company billboard and describes an early surfer-style gimmick. The book’s account includes recollections from Paul Heyman and Fullington about reshaping the character; those are attributed memories rather than a neutral record of every creative decision.

4. The entrance became a major part of the act
Beer, a cigarette and a slow walk through the audience made The Sandman’s arrival a spectacle in its own right. WWE’s profile quotes ECW owner Paul Heyman describing how the entrance and crowd reaction could make the match feel secondary. Heyman also summed up the appeal this way: “He was just a tough guy looking for a fight. And people loved him.”
5. The Singapore cane became his visual signature
WWE says Sandman began carrying a Singapore cane the year after his 1992 arrival in ECW. In a 2026 interview with Chris Van Vliet, Fullington recalled Heyman asking him to bring a cane to the ring and described making an early version from a branch. That interview is Fullington’s retrospective account of the idea’s origins.

6. His feud with Tommy Dreamer included a shocking storyline
One of Sandman’s best-known rivalries was with Tommy Dreamer. WWE’s profile recounts an angle in which Dreamer blinded Sandman with a lit cigarette. It was a scripted wrestling storyline, not a real blinding.
7. Raven’s 1996 angle drew Sandman’s family into the story
In 1996, Raven’s storyline involved Sandman’s wife and son, Tyler. WWE says Sandman eventually reunited with Tyler. This, too, was an angle: the family conflict belonged to the performed story, not a factual account of events in Fullington’s private life.

8. He briefly wrestled in WCW as Hardcore Hak
Between ECW runs, Fullington worked briefly for World Championship Wrestling under the name Hardcore Hak. He later returned to ECW for another major championship chapter.

At Guilty as Charged 2001, Sandman won his fifth and final ECW World title in a three-way match featuring tables, ladders, chairs and canes. WWE’s account says he immediately lost the championship to Rhyno. The sequence is a reminder that title count alone does not explain why fans remember Sandman: his character and entrance were central to his impact.

When WWE relaunched ECW in 2006, Sandman joined the roster. WWE also records him as part of the team with Tommy Dreamer, Sabu and Rob Van Dam that won at WrestleMania 23. Looking back at his place in ECW, Heyman called him “the embodiment of Extreme Championship Wrestling”—an influential figure’s assessment of the character, not an objective ranking.
