10 Things About Stone Cold Being Hit by a Car That Seemed Not to Make Sense

Who hit Stone Cold Steve Austin with a car? WWE’s later account says Rikishi was driving, with Triple H masterminding the attack. But when Austin was struck before Survivor Series 1999, the assailant was presented as unknown. That gap between the original mystery and the later explanation is why the storyline can seem confusing.

1. The attacker was a mystery at Survivor Series 1999

WWE’s recap of Survivor Series 1999 describes Austin as having been hit by a car before the event, but does not identify the attacker. At that point in the story, the driver’s identity was unresolved.

2. Austin’s absence changed the title match

Austin had been scheduled to face Triple H and The Rock in a WWE Championship Triple Threat Match. His vacant place was filled by a mystery entrant, later revealed to be Big Show. The attack therefore altered the advertised main event rather than leading to a separate replacement bout.

3. Big Show won the WWE Championship

WWE’s event recap says Big Show defeated Triple H and The Rock to win the title. The immediate consequence of the attack was not just Austin’s absence: it helped put a new champion in the match.

4. WWE’s later account named Rikishi as the driver

WWE’s Survivor Series 2000 recap identifies Rikishi as the person who drove the car that hit Austin. This is the retrospective answer to “Who hit Stone Cold Steve Austin with a car?”—not information the 1999 event recap gives viewers at the time.

5. Triple H was identified as the mastermind

The same 2000 WWE recap says Triple H masterminded the attack. The later account therefore assigns two different roles: Rikishi drove the car, while Triple H was behind the plan.

6. The explanation came later than the attack

The 1999 recap leaves the attacker unidentified; the 2000 recap supplies the names. The available official accounts establish that change in what the story disclosed, but do not establish the exact first broadcast date of Rikishi’s reveal.

7. The official recaps do not fill in every step

WWE’s later recap confirms the driver and mastermind, but it does not provide an episode-by-episode account of the intervening investigation or explain the creative rationale for the reveal. The gap in detail is real; it is not, by itself, proof that the story contradicted itself.

8. Austin and Triple H’s feud supplied the payoff

At Survivor Series 2000, Austin and Triple H’s match ended in a no-contest after a brawl. WWE’s recap presents the confrontation as Austin’s revenge for the earlier attack.

9. The revenge involved a forklift and Triple H’s car

In WWE’s account, Austin used a forklift to lift Triple H’s car and drop it onto concrete. WWE describes the car as being raised 15 feet; that is the recap’s figure for the staged storyline moment, not an independently measured statistic.

10. The apparent nonsense is mostly a reveal gap

Read in sequence, the official story is straightforward: Austin was attacked before the 1999 event, Big Show took his place and won the championship, and WWE’s later account named Rikishi as the driver and Triple H as the mastermind. What can feel illogical is that the initial event recap preserves the mystery while the later one summarizes its answer and payoff without documenting every intervening beat.

What WWE’s recaps establish

  • WWE’s Survivor Series 1999 recap says Austin had been scheduled for the title Triple Threat, was hit by a car beforehand, and was replaced by Big Show, who won the match. It treats the assailant as unknown.
  • WWE’s Survivor Series 2000 recap identifies Rikishi as the driver and Triple H as the mastermind, then recounts Austin and Triple H’s no-contest and the forklift car stunt.
