The ten names below come from that year’s list—not a definitive ranking across all time. Its figures estimate box-office return for each dollar of actor pay; they do not measure acting ability or prove what a studio ultimately earned.
Forbes’ 2011 ranking: the ten actors
The figures are return-per-dollar values in a Forbes survey table reproduced in Mathematical Ideas 12/E. They are not salaries, current valuations, or a ranking that can be compared directly with another year’s edition. The original Forbes page is not fully accessible; the table’s secondary reproduction identifies Forbes.com as its source.

What “overpaid” meant in this ranking
Forbes described its 2011 method as examining an actor’s last three non-animation movies during the preceding period and comparing their returns with what the actor earned. The ratio is a narrow commercial-efficiency measure based on estimated compensation and selected film performance. A low return relative to actor pay put a performer higher on the list.
That label does not establish that an actor lacked skill, that audiences disliked their work, or that a film lost money. Nor is box-office revenue divided by actor pay the same as a studio’s final profit: the available account does not establish all costs, accounting treatment, or later revenue streams.

#1 Best Overall
- The 9th film from Quentin Tarantino features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood?s golden age.
Why the list changes from year to year
Forbes’ 2013 edition used a different period and inputs. The Los Angeles Times reported that Adam Sandler ranked first at $3.40 returned per actor-salary dollar, followed by Katherine Heigl at $3.50 and Reese Witherspoon at $3.90. Forbes’ 2013 method combined Celebrity 100 research with Box Office Mojo data and considered an actor’s three most recent films from the previous three years released before June 1.
Those 2013 placements and ratios should not be merged with the 2011 table: the eligible films, cutoff dates, estimates, and edition differ. Later Forbes coverage also described using earnings estimates and recent films, but the accessible description does not provide enough detail to treat all editions as one consistent series.

How to interpret the numbers
- They are tied to a particular sample. The 2011 ranking looked at a selected set of recent non-animation films, not an actor’s entire career.
- They are estimates, not audited compensation records. The ratio depends on reported or estimated actor pay as well as film performance.
- They do not capture every revenue source. The reported box-office comparison does not establish streaming, licensing, later sales, or other long-term value.
- They are not a measure of artistic value. “Overpaid” is Forbes’ editorial label for this calculation, not an objective judgment about talent or personal worth.
