These ten musicians died between the ages of 17 and 30, each leaving a distinct mark on music. Six are often associated with the “27 Club,” but the deaths described here happened under different circumstances—and the label does not establish that 27 is a uniquely dangerous age.
Four musicians who died before age 27
These four artists died at 17, 22 or 30. Two were killed in separate plane crashes decades apart; another drowned, and one died in an aviation accident.

Six musicians associated with the “27 Club”
The “27 Club” is a cultural label for prominent musicians who died at 27, not a formal group or a reliable explanation for why anyone died. The following accounts distinguish reported circumstances from cases where the cause remains uncertain.
Brian Jones
Rolling Stones founder and original frontman Brian Jones was found dead in his pool in 1969, a few weeks after leaving the band. History.com reports that the coroner’s verdict was “death by misadventure”; that wording is a historical report, not a basis here for a broader legal conclusion. History.com’s account of musicians who lived fast and died at 27 summarizes the case.

Jimi Hendrix
Guitarist Jimi Hendrix was born November 27, 1942, and died September 18, 1970. History.com attributes his death to asphyxiation after sleeping pills and alcohol, though accounts of the precise circumstances vary. His official biography documents his career and guitar innovations. It also recalls an early musical impulse: his father, Al Hendrix, remembered finding him strumming a broom as though it were a guitar.
Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin was born January 19, 1943, and died October 4, 1970. Biography.com describes her death as an accidental overdose; History.com describes it as a heroin overdose. Biography.com’s Janis Joplin biography and the History.com overview document those accounts.

Jim Morrison

Kurt Cobain
Nirvana singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain died in 1994. History.com and Biography.com describe his death as suicide. His death should be treated as a loss, not romanticized or reduced to a myth about artistic destiny. History.com’s overview and Biography.com’s Kurt Cobain biography provide accounts.

A 2011 BMJ retrospective cohort study found three deaths at age 27 among 522 musicians at risk. Its press release said age itself was unlikely to explain the deaths. That finding challenges the idea that 27 has a special power; it does not establish that musicians face no other risks. The BMJ press release summarizes the study.
