This ranking puts The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring first for the way its journey, character drama, and set pieces work together. The list includes animation, superhero fantasy, and science-fiction/fantasy hybrids when they deliver the kind of excitement fantasy fans are looking for.
How this ranking defines “thrilling”
Thrill here means a mix of suspense, forward momentum, danger, memorable set pieces, and emotional stakes—not simply the number or size of the action scenes. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a consensus score or a claim that one list can settle the genre.
Fantasy has porous borders. David Faris’s list for The Week describes the difficulty of defining the genre and takes a narrower approach, excluding animation and films it considers more comfortably science fiction or superhero stories. This list takes a broader one: animated films and cross-genre entries qualify if their magic, impossible worlds, or supernatural danger are central to the experience. Editorial lists and audience-rating lists offer useful context, but neither directly measures thrills.
The 10 most thrilling fantasy movies
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A young hobbit inherits a ring whose power threatens the world, and joins a fellowship tasked with carrying it toward destruction. The road-story structure keeps the film moving from one perilous place to the next, while the members’ clashing temperaments make the danger personal. Its descent through the mines of Moria builds dread toward the bridge of Khazad-Dûm and the confrontation with the Balrog—a standout showdown singled out by Time Out.
#1 Best Overall
- Continuing the storyline based on the hit Playstation game Final Fantasy VII, two years have passed, a mysterious illness is spreading and old enemies are astir. And Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again...
It ranks first because it balances suspense, scale, and emotional investment instead of relying on spectacle alone. Time Out places it first in its editorial fantasy list; Letterboxd’s live-action fantasy list placed it fifth as of May 28, 2026, using average member ratings rather than a thrill score. Those are different measures, but both support its standing as a prominent fantasy choice.
2. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) — fantasy and science-fiction hybrid
In a devastated wasteland, a convoy’s escape becomes a prolonged pursuit across hostile terrain. Its thrill comes from relentless forward motion and danger that is easy to read even when the world is unfamiliar. It places second for its sustained intensity and inventive set pieces, though its post-apocalyptic science-fiction setting makes it a boundary-crossing pick rather than straightforward high fantasy.
3. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) — dark fantasy
During the Spanish Civil War, a girl encounters a fantastical underworld while living amid real-world brutality. The film builds excitement through uncertainty: each supernatural task carries risk, and it is not always clear what can be trusted. It ranks high for making dread and emotional stakes as gripping as physical danger, rather than treating fantasy as a succession of battles.
Rank #2
4. Spirited Away (2001) — animation
After entering a world of spirits, a girl must find a way to save her parents and return home. Strange rules, unpredictable creatures, and a constant sense of vulnerability keep the story tense even in its quieter passages. It ranks fourth because its suspense grows from discovery and uncertainty as much as from action. Its animated form is included deliberately, outside the narrower scope used by The Week.
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
At Hogwarts, Harry learns that an escaped prisoner may be connected to the danger surrounding him. The film turns familiar school routines into a mystery shaped by hidden motives, looming threats, and a tightening sense of time. It takes fifth for its balance of magical adventure and suspense, with enough context for newcomers to follow the central peril even if the wider series adds extra resonance.
6. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) — wuxia fantasy
A stolen sword and the people pursuing it set off a story of duty, desire, and extraordinary martial skill. Its airborne duels make the action itself feel fantastical, but the tension also comes from characters divided between restraint and freedom. It ranks sixth for pairing memorable movement with intimate emotional conflict; it is a wuxia fantasy rather than a quest-driven magical epic.
7. Coraline (2009) — animation and supernatural horror
A girl discovers a seemingly improved version of her home, where the welcome hides a dangerous bargain. The movie’s excitement is rooted in creeping unease and the question of when the other world will reveal its true cost. It ranks seventh because its patient, eerie suspense is a different kind of thrill from a chase or battle, and its animated fantasy crosses into horror.
8. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) — animated superhero fantasy
Teenager Miles Morales gains extraordinary abilities and encounters Spider-people from other dimensions. Its kinetic visual style and escalating threat keep the pace high, while Miles’s uncertainty gives the spectacle a human center. It sits eighth because the superhero and multiverse elements make it a genre hybrid, but its impossible worlds and magical-feeling premise fit this broader, excitement-focused list.

A rescue mission unfolds through sword fights, traps, strange encounters, and a romance under threat. Its playful tone does not remove suspense: reversals and peril keep the adventure moving, even as the film pokes fun at fantasy conventions. It ranks ninth because its thrills are lighter and more comic than the entries above it, but its pace and inventive obstacles make it an enduring adventure.
Rank #4
- The magical kingdom of Lucis is home to the world?s last remaining Crystal, and the menacing empire of Niflheim is determined to steal it.
10. Pan (2015) — fantasy adventure
A boy is swept from wartime London into a fantastical version of Neverland, where he encounters pirates and a struggle for survival. The appeal is its colorful scale and succession of dangers rather than sustained dread or deep mystery. It rounds out the ranking as a spectacle-forward adventure: exciting in bursts, though less consistently suspenseful than the films above it.

The strongest case for the top spot is the way its pleasures reinforce one another. The journey gives the film a clear engine; the fellowship’s relationships give each threat consequences; and scenes such as the Balrog confrontation turn that investment into spectacle. As Time Out contributor Tom Huddleston puts it, “And that’s the reason why Jackson’s ‘Rings’ movies work, and will continue to thrill moviegoers for generations to come: the characters are as important as the special effects.” That is an editorial view, not a universal verdict, but it captures why this film earns the lead here.
Time Out’s list is an editorial selection of fantasy films, while Letterboxd’s live-action list ranks films by average member rating and can change over time. Neither purports to rank thrill level; the order above weighs suspense, pace, spectacle, and emotional stakes for viewers seeking exciting fantasy.
