Clancy Brown’s most iconic roles span cult films, acclaimed drama, television, animation, and video games. This selection highlights performances that stand out for their recognition, longevity, or the range they reveal—not a measured popularity ranking.

Clancy Brown’s 10 most iconic roles

  1. The Kurgan in Highlander (1986)

Brown’s towering villain in the fantasy film is one of his defining screen roles: a brutal, memorable adversary whose imposing presence helped establish a persona he would revisit in other authority-driven and villainous parts. Paramount+ lists Highlander among his film credits and describes the film as a cult classic; Rotten Tomatoes also includes it in his career profile. Paramount+ and Rotten Tomatoes.

  2. Captain Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

As the sadistic prison guard, Brown makes institutional cruelty feel immediate and personal. It is one of his most recognizable live-action performances, sharply different from the comic voice roles that later reached a broad television audience. In a 2018 interview, Brown recalled that people did not know the film would be good before release, or even after it came out; that is his recollection, not a box-office statistic. The A.V. Club interview.

  3. Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–present)

Brown’s gravelly, money-minded crab is among his signature voice performances. A Disney / 20th Century Studios press biography said he was celebrating 20 years voicing Mr. Krabs in 2020; that marks the tenure reported at that time, not a newly calculated current total. In a 2018 interview, Brown described an early voice session and Steve Hillenburg’s direction to improvise, recalling, “I’m not gonna make stuff up.” Disney / 20th Century Studios press biography and The A.V. Club.

  4. Lex Luthor in Superman: The Animated Series and DC animation

Brown’s Lex Luthor is a cool, controlled counterpoint to his more physically imposing live-action villains. The A.V. Club’s 2018 interview identifies both Lex and Mr. Krabs as arguably his two most notable voice roles, an assessment that captures how far his animation work reaches beyond one character. The A.V. Club interview.

  5. Sergeant Zim in Starship Troopers (1997)

Brown’s Sergeant Zim is a memorable military authority figure in the satirical science-fiction film. The role plays to his commanding screen presence, while giving it a very different context from Hadley’s prison authority or the Kurgan’s fantasy menace. Rotten Tomatoes’ Clancy Brown profile.

  6. Viking in Bad Boys (1983)

  7. Detective Hank Anderson in Detroit: Become Human

Brown’s role as Hank Anderson brings his screen acting into a story-driven video game. The character gives his familiar gruffness room for a more extended relationship-driven performance, showing how his work crosses beyond film, television, and animation. Paramount+ lists Brown as the game’s Detective Hank Anderson. Paramount+.

What makes these roles stand out

Brown’s range is the through-line: he can play a terrifying fantasy antagonist, a cruel prison guard, a military instructor, a small-town power broker, or an animated miser without becoming interchangeable. The list also crosses media. Film and television supplied several of his most visible live-action parts, while Mr. Krabs and Lex Luthor demonstrate the longevity and reach of his voice work; Hank Anderson adds a major narrative game role.
