“Wouldn’t get made today” rarely means a film is impossible to produce. It may mean its premise would face sharper questions, its satire would need clearer framing, or a studio might not finance it at the same scale. These ten films illustrate those different pressures; they are examples, not a definitive ranking or proof that no filmmaker could make them now.
What “wouldn’t get made today” actually means
There are at least two separate questions behind the phrase: Would the material draw more scrutiny now, and would a studio still pay for the project in its original form and at its original scale? A film might be possible through independent financing or a different distribution route even if it no longer fits a studio slate.
That distinction matters for Dazed and Confused, although it is not one of the ten films below. In a 2024 interview with The Independent, director Richard Linklater answered “No way” when asked whether it would be made today, explaining that studio slates no longer included the “$6m indie-ish type movies” he was discussing. That approximate phrase describes a category, not a verified production-cost figure for the film, and Linklater was talking about studio economics—not claiming that an independent filmmaker could not make a similar story.
The examples here come largely from recent commentary, so they point to questions worth considering rather than establish what every audience member would think or what a particular studio would approve. Where a filmmaker has discussed the issue, that is evidence of that filmmaker’s perspective, not an industry-wide rule.

Ten films that could face a different conversation
1. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007)
A 2025 Brit + Co list argues that the comedy leans on gay stereotypes. The relevant question is how the jokes frame gay identity and whether the characters are the target—or whether the humor depends on familiar stereotypes. That makes the film a useful example of changing expectations around representation, not proof of a universal audience response or that comedy about sexuality cannot be made.
2. Manhattan (1979)
The relationship at the center of the concern is between a 42-year-old man and a 17-year-old high-school student. A contemporary production would face questions about how it frames that relationship and whose perspective it privileges. That is distinct from simply declaring what the original film says about it: the current debate concerns both the subject matter and the choices a new production might make in presenting it.

3. Borat (2006)
Borat uses offensive stereotypes as part of a satirical approach. Satirical intent does not automatically ensure that every viewer will recognize the intended target; the key question is whether the satire makes its target legible, or whether a stereotype risks being taken at face value. The cited commentary identifies that tension but does not establish how audiences as a whole would respond to a new version.
4. Rain Man (1988)
Recent commentary questions the film’s representation of autism. A portrayal in one movie should not be treated as representative of autistic people as a whole. The issue for a contemporary production would be how it develops the character and whose experience informs that depiction; the cited discussion does not establish that the film caused any measurable effect.

5. Stagecoach (1939)
The criticism highlighted by Brit + Co concerns the portrayal of Indigenous people as violent antagonists. That portrayal belongs in the historical context of classic Westerns, where Indigenous characters were often positioned within genre conventions rather than given equal narrative complexity. A brief modern commentary list is not a full account of Indigenous representation in Westerns, but it identifies a framing choice a contemporary production would need to confront.
6. Freaks (1932)
Freaks has a complicated legacy: the disabled performers are characters in the story, yet their differences are also presented sensationally. Calling the film simply offensive misses that tension. A present-day discussion would have to consider both how the performers are characterized and how the film invites viewers to look at them.

7. Home Alone (1990)
The premise asks viewers to accept that a young child is left behind and then faces burglars alone. That might prompt stronger objections from some contemporary family audiences, but a possible objection is not a prediction of certain rejection. The story’s comic danger is also the engine of its appeal, which a new version might handle differently without abandoning the setup.
8. Tropic Thunder (2008)
This is the clearest case of a filmmaker commenting directly on the production climate. In a 2024 Variety interview, director and co-writer Ben Stiller called the Robert Downey Jr. character’s premise “incredibly dicey” and said, “Obviously, in this environment, edgier comedy is just harder to do.” He also said the satire targeted actors who pursue awards at any cost, and that the film was fortunate to be made at its original scale, crediting Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks with enabling it.

Those comments preserve two points at once: Stiller described a provocative premise that would be harder to mount now, and he explained the intended target of the satire. Intent does not settle how every viewer interprets the joke. Nor does his retrospective view prove that no version could be made today; his comments address the challenge of making this kind of edgy comedy at the original scale.
9. Blazing Saddles (1974)
Often used as a test case for taboo-breaking racial satire, Blazing Saddles also belongs to the 1970s New Hollywood moment, when filmmakers were deconstructing established genres. A 2024 Jewish Telegraphic Agency feature places the film in that context; a Best Life list from 2024 also cites it as a film unlikely to be made today. The pertinent question is whether a new work could make its satirical target clear while taking account of how the material may be received—not whether taboo-breaking satire is categorically impossible.
10. Soul Man (1986)
The central flashpoint is the premise: a white student darkens his skin to pose as Black and obtain a scholarship. That raises direct questions about representation and the use of race as a comic device. The cited commentary identifies a likely point of contention, not unanimity among contemporary viewers or proof that every story involving race would be rejected.

Some examples raise questions about stereotypes, representation, or the framing of a relationship. Others rely on a provocative premise or a deliberately risky joke. The production question is separate: a studio may hesitate to finance a mid-budget project at its former scale even when the subject itself is not prohibited. A new adaptation could also change its script, collaborators, budget, or distribution plan, making it different from an exact recreation.

Linklater’s comments about Dazed and Confused concern the shrinking studio space for indie-scale films. Neither statement establishes a rule for all studios, films, or audiences. For the other titles, the cited lists offer illustrative criticism, not reliable forecasts of greenlights or audience reaction.
