These ten celebrations mark new beginnings, seasonal change, religious history and remembrance—from Deepavali’s lamps to the family-centered observance of the dead in Indigenous communities in Mexico. They are a representative selection, not a definitive list: traditions vary between communities and households, and the same holiday name does not mean everyone celebrates in the same way. UNESCO notes that festive practices are closely tied to community history, memory and worldview.
Lights, new beginnings and the turn of the year
1. Deepavali (Diwali), celebrated in India and beyond
Deepavali is a multi-day festival that falls on the new moon in October or November, according to the lunar calendar. In the practices documented by UNESCO, people clean and decorate homes and public spaces, light lamps and candles, offer prayers, and share meals, sweets and gifts. Families and communities pass customs on to the next generation, but observance is not identical everywhere. UNESCO’s Deepavali heritage record describes the festival as living heritage shaped by those who celebrate it.
2. Nowruz, Nauryz, Nevruz and related celebrations
Nowruz and its related names refer to spring and the new year across a broad region. Local celebrations can include meals, games, music, dance and other community events; some communities also practice fire-jumping. There is no single ritual checklist that applies across all the places where the holiday is observed. In 2021, UNESCO said the names Nowruz, Nauryz or Nevruz signify “new day” for more than 300 million people. UNESCO describes the celebration as promoting peace, solidarity, reconciliation and neighbourliness. UNESCO’s multinational heritage record and its 2021 International Day of Nowruz article explain its regional reach and significance.
3. Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year
Pohela Boishakh marks the first day of the Bangla calendar. It is a Bengali new-year observance in its own right, distinct from other spring celebrations and Lunar New Year traditions. The Australian Department of Home Affairs lists it in its 2026 calendar of cultural and religious dates.

Lunar New Year has distinct traditions and names
“Lunar New Year” is not one interchangeable holiday. The Australian Department of Home Affairs’ 2026 calendar lists Chinese Lunar New Year, Vietnamese Tết and Korean Seollal separately. The examples below are associated with those communities; they are not expectations for every family.
4. Chinese Lunar New Year
Family gatherings, ancestor worship, special foods and gift exchanges are among the customs associated with Chinese communities in the calendar. Which customs a household observes can differ. Using the specific name “Chinese Lunar New Year” also avoids treating it as a blanket label for other Lunar New Year celebrations. The Australian Department of Home Affairs’ 2026 calendar lists it separately from Tết and Seollal.

Keeping the Vietnamese name and context in view recognizes Tết as a distinct observance, not simply another name for Chinese Lunar New Year. The calendar gives the observance its own entry.
6. Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year
Seollal is the Korean Lunar New Year observance. It typically lasts three days, including the day before and the day after the new year, according to the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ 2026 calendar. Holidays of remembrance and religious history
7. An Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead in Mexico
In the Indigenous communities described by UNESCO, this late-October-to-early-November observance commemorates the temporary return of deceased relatives and loved ones. Families may lay flower petals, candles, offerings, favorite foods and paper crafts along routes between the cemetery and home, as well as at home shrines and tombs. UNESCO connects the practices with ancestors and the maize cycle. This account concerns the communities in UNESCO’s record; it should not be taken as a description of every Mexican or Latin American observance, or reduced to decorative imagery. UNESCO’s record of the Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead provides the specific cultural context.
8. Hanukkah
Hanukkah commemorates the recapture and rededication of the Jerusalem Temple by the Jewish people, according to the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The calendar identifies the occasion but does not establish a single set of customs to describe across Jewish communities.
