These 10 celebrity-focused posts show Ellen DeGeneres working in several comic registers: wordplay, affectionate teasing and a little self-mockery. They’re a curated selection, not an objective ranking of her funniest tweets; BuzzFeed’s 2017 roundup is the source for the dated examples below.

10 funny Ellen DeGeneres tweets

  1. Oprah’s security guard gets it wrong

November 20, 2010: “Weird. The security guard at Oprah’s says she’s not expecting me. That’s clearly a mistake.” DeGeneres plays the joke as if being expected at Oprah’s home were a given; the guard’s answer is the absurd part. BuzzFeed’s roundup attributes the post to DeGeneres.

  2. Florence and the dryer

October 14, 2010: “Florence and the Machine are on the show this Friday! Can’t wait to meet Florence. A little nervous about the machine. I hope it’s a dryer.” The post pretends the band’s name refers to a person named Florence and an actual household machine.

  3. Chace Crawford becomes Chace Crawfish

August 10, 2010: “The person I named my crawfish after won a Teen Choice Award. Congrats Chace Crawford. Chace Crawfish and I are so proud of you.” The joke is a simple name swap: actor Chace Crawford becomes a crawfish’s namesake.

  4. Batman skips church

October 3, 2013: “What do you call it when Batman skips church? Christian Bale. #ClassicJokeWednesday” The familiar name-based punchline turns actor Christian Bale into the answer to a deliberately corny riddle.

  5. Jay Z gets a birthday rhyme

December 4, 2015: “.@S_C_ Happy birthday, Jay Z! You’re 45! That’s Cray Z.” The birthday greeting ends in a rhyme built around the rapper’s name.

  6. Saint West, patron saint of Instagram

December 7, 2015: “Kim and Kanye’s baby is named Saint West! No word yet on what he’s the patron Saint of, but my bet is Instagram.” The post takes the baby’s name literally, then gives the mock saint a suitably celebrity-era domain.

  7. Nicki Minaj’s many birthday guests

December 8, 2015: “Happy birthday, @NickiMinaj, Roman, Barbie, Martha, Tyrone, and all the others. You’re some of my favorite people.” Rather than treating the names as separate guests, the joke nods to the stage personas associated with Minaj.

  8. “Hello from the other side”

November 20, 2015: “Why did @Adele cross the road? She wanted to say hello from the other side.” Adele’s hit song “Hello” supplies the punchline to the classic road-crossing setup.

  9. Ocean’s Four arrives

June 6, 2017: “Welcome to the world, Ella and Alexander Clooney. Congratulations, George and Amal, or as I’m now calling you, Ocean’s Four.” The Clooneys’ new family members become a playful extension of the Ocean’s film franchise title.

  10. Steve Carell’s birthday role

August 17, 2017: “Happy birthday, @SteveCarell, or as I call you now, the 55-year-old virgin.” This is birthday teasing about Carell’s film role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, not a claim about his personal life.

Why these tweets still land

The jokes rely on different kinds of recognition: a celebrity name that can be reshaped into a pun, a famous song lyric, a film reference, or a deliberately overconfident imagined relationship. Most need little setup once the reference is clear, which is part of the appeal of a short tweet.

DeGeneres’s 2014 Academy Awards selfie belongs to a different category of Twitter moment. TIME reported that the image became the platform’s most-retweeted post within hours; its later ranking used Favstar because Twitter did not provide an official list. That historical popularity applies to the selfie, not to the ten jokes here. TIME’s account of the most popular tweets was published in 2016 and updated January 17, 2024.
