The sources reviewed establish eight well-documented Norwegian destinations with ghost stories—not ten. The accounts below are folklore and reported experiences, not verified paranormal events. They range from a former prison in Oslo to a monastery island outside Trondheim, each with a distinct historical setting behind its legend.

Oslo and Trondheim: prisons, a fortress, and a disputed monk
Akershus Fortress, Oslo
Akershus Fortress has served as a prison, and Visit Norway recounts reports of whispers and scratching in its corridors. Guards have also reportedly felt as though they were being pushed while alone. These are accounts associated with the site, not established events. Visit Norway says the prison closed in 1950. Visit Norway’s guide to haunted destinations provides the story.
Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim
The cathedral’s best-known ghost story concerns a monk-like figure with a bloody wound to his throat. Visit Norway says bishop Marie Gleditsch reported seeing the figure in 1924; later reports describe chanting and organ music. The account is controversial: the same guide notes that some historians dispute whether monks were ever connected with the cathedral. The story should therefore be read as local lore rather than a settled historical account.
Historic hotels and their ghost stories
Dalen Hotel, Telemark
The “English Lady” legend is tied to room 17 and a late-nineteenth-century guest called Miss Greenfield. In the tale, a dead infant was found after she left, and she died before standing trial. This is a legend, not a verified account of a crime. Dalen Hotel’s history places the property in context: it opened in 1894. The hotel’s own page documents its history, not the supernatural story: The Story of Dalen Hotel.

Hotel Union Øye, Sunnmøre
The “Blue Room” story centers on Linda and a German officer. Reports say Linda can be heard weeping. The hotel’s official history says it has welcomed visitors since 1891, establishing the property’s age but not proving the haunting. Its historical background is available at Hotel Union Øye’s history page.
Industrial heritage: Anna Krefting and Blåmannen
Bærums Verk
Bærums Verk’s ghost lore includes Anna Krefting, who is said to appear dressed in green at Værtshuset. Another story concerns a telephone in an administration building that reportedly rings and produces only static. Visit Norway says Værtshuset has operated since 1640; that date is presented by the tourism source. The setting is a former ironworks village, where historic buildings give the stories their particular backdrop.

Blaafarveværket
At the former cobalt mining site, now a museum, the figure called Blåmannen is said to appear carrying a lantern before disasters. Visit Norway connects the legend with an 1854 mine accident that killed six men; one survivor reportedly said he had seen Blåmannen. The accident is a historical event in the account, while the figure and its supposed warning are folklore.
An island and church ruins with unsettled stories
Munkholmen, outside Trondheim
Munkholmen’s past includes an abbey, a fort, and a prison. Visit Norway describes sightings that some people associate with prisoner Peder Schumacher Griffenfeld. The guide says boats run from Ravnkloa regularly from May through September, and that visitors can join a tour or explore freely. Those are seasonal arrangements reported by the source, not a guarantee of current service; check access and boat schedules before setting out.

Nes church ruins, Vormsund
Stories around the ruins include reports of lights, sounds, and apparitions, as well as tales about priest Jacob Christian Finckenhagen, who served there from 1800 to 1837. Accounts disagree about how he died and what happened afterward. The conflicting versions are part of the legend; there is not a single established account of a ghost at the site.

The stories draw their atmosphere from real and varied settings: a former prison, a cathedral, historic hotels, industrial heritage, an island once used as a prison, and church ruins. That historical backdrop can explain why a place attracts legends, but it is not evidence that supernatural events occurred. The broad destination guide from Visit Norway is the source for the eight locations and their reported folklore. De Historiske’s ghost-story collection also presents hotel-related lore.
