1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no official ranking of the year’s best science-fiction television. This list weighs narrative execution, originality, performances, tonal control, ambition and how well a season welcomes newcomers. It includes both new series and returning seasons released during 2025, rather than requiring a season to begin and end within the calendar year. The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus or a measured score.
How this ranking works
Science fiction in 2025 ranged from franchise space adventure and speculative drama to horror, comedy, animation and documentary-adjacent formats. To compare unlike shows, the ranking considers how clearly each series realizes its premise, how distinctive it feels within the genre, and whether its performances and tone support the story. Returning seasons are eligible alongside debuts; a show’s position reflects the season or 2025 offering, not every installment in its history.
Other year-end lists use different boundaries. Looper’s January 11, 2026 ranking only considered seasons that both began and ended in 2025, while Space.com’s December 22, 2025 countdown included 12 shows. Those differing rules help explain why “best of 2025” lists do not produce one definitive order. Looper’s eligibility rule and Space.com’s 2025 selection provide useful points of comparison.
The 10 greatest sci-fi shows of 2025
1. Severance
Severance earns the top spot for turning a speculative premise into a tightly controlled dramatic engine. Its puzzle-box approach gives the season room to build unease and deepen its characters, rather than relying on science-fiction imagery alone. TheWrap included it in its 2025 selection, placing it among a year’s field that also encompassed space adventure, horror and animation. TheWrap’s selection offers that broader comparison.

2. Andor
Andor stands out as franchise science fiction built around political and human stakes. Its place here reflects the strength of its dramatic approach within a familiar universe: the genre setting matters because it gives pressure and consequence to the characters’ choices. TheWrap included the series in its list, alongside shows with very different formats and tones. See TheWrap’s 2025 picks.
3. Alien: Earth
Alien: Earth brings science-fiction horror into the year’s top tier. Its premise sits at the intersection of speculative world-building and the bodily, suspense-driven traditions of the Alien franchise. Both Space.com and TheWrap selected it, making it one of the clearest overlaps in their coverage. Space.com’s ranked list and TheWrap’s selection describe the range of the year’s contenders.
Rank #2

4. Pluribus
Pluribus makes a strong case for original speculative storytelling: its central idea invites curiosity while leaving room for uncertainty about where the story will go. Space.com included it among its 2025 shows. The outlet reported that Apple TV called it the service’s most-watched series ever, but no underlying figure or measurement period was supplied, so that claim is not a basis for this ranking. Space.com’s coverage provides the show’s place in its broader year-end selection.
5. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 3
Strange New Worlds is a strong choice for viewers who want science fiction that can move between adventure and character-driven storytelling. Its episodic spacegoing structure offers a different pleasure from a season-long mystery: each episode can emphasize a new problem while the crew remains the anchor. Space.com and TheWrap both included the series in their 2025 selections. Space.com and TheWrap show how it sits among the year’s franchise and non-franchise titles.

It is adapted from Martha Wells’s The Murderbot Diaries, giving interested viewers a direct route to the source material as well as the television series. Space.com and TheWrap both included the show in their year-end selections. Space.com identifies the book-series connection; TheWrap includes the series in its own picks.
7. Black Mirror, season 7
Black Mirror remains a natural fit for a list spanning multiple kinds of science fiction: the anthology format can shift its speculative premise, mood and scale from story to story. Its place here recognizes the season as part of 2025’s television landscape, rather than treating a returning anthology as less eligible than a new series. Both Space.com and TheWrap included it. Space.com’s list and TheWrap’s list provide their respective selections.

8. Foundation, season 3
Foundation represents the ambitious, expansive side of screen science fiction. Its place in this ranking reflects the appeal of a series working at the scale of a long-running space saga, in contrast with the intimate premise-driven dramas elsewhere on the list. Space.com included season 3 in its 2025 countdown. Read Space.com’s ranked coverage.
9. Common Side Effects
Common Side Effects adds animated science-fiction thriller storytelling to a year dominated in many lists by live-action franchises and prestige dramas. TheWrap’s selection underscores how broad the category can be: animation is not a side note when the format serves a distinctive speculative story. TheWrap included the series among its 2025 choices.

10. The War Between the Land and the Sea
This entry represents the franchise-connected end of the year’s genre range. Its inclusion reflects a year in which returning universes and new additions both contributed to the science-fiction conversation. Space.com included the series in its 2025 coverage. See Space.com’s countdown.

These ten choices are not the only defensible list. Space.com’s coverage also discusses Silo season 2 and Once Upon a Time in Space. TheWrap includes Dimension 20: Cloudward Ho!, an actual-play fantasy selection that illustrates how some year-end genre lists stretch beyond conventional scripted science fiction. Those additions show why an inclusion rule matters: a list can be shaped by whether it counts returning seasons, genre-adjacent formats, or only shows whose full seasons fit inside the calendar year. Space.com’s selection and TheWrap’s selection give readers alternatives to this ranking.
Where to watch these shows
Streaming catalogs change by country and over time, and the platform references in year-end coverage are article-era indications rather than a current availability guarantee. Before choosing a service, check the show’s official listing in your region and confirm that the season you want is included in your plan. Space.com’s article mentions services including Apple TV, Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Hulu/Disney+, but it does not establish that every listed title is available on each service in every territory today. Consult its coverage as a starting point, then verify the current catalog directly.
