Here is a ranked watchlist of ten landmark series, from boundary-pushing dramas to network sitcoms and reality television. “Gay” is used here in the broad, colloquial sense of queer TV: the list includes stories about gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people, while noting whose experiences each show centers.
This is an editorial ranking, not an official or consensus list. The order weighs historical influence, how centrally queer lives shape each series, cultural reach and what makes its format or perspective distinctive. The Television Academy’s Pride guide, for example, presents shows alphabetically rather than ranking them.
10 greatest gay and queer TV shows, ranked
1. Queer as Folk (U.S., 2000–2005)
Showtime’s drama put gay and lesbian friends in Pittsburgh at the center of a frank, ensemble story about sex, relationships and community. The Television Academy dates its run from December 3, 2000, to August 7, 2005, and reports that it became Showtime’s top-rated show by the end of its first season. That combination of central queer characters and cable-era candor makes it a defining U.S. series for this list. Television Academy oral history.
2. Will & Grace (NBC, original run 1998–2006; later revival)
As a network sitcom, Will & Grace brought a gay man, his best friend, and their circle into mainstream prime-time comedy. The Television Academy describes it as ushering in a “quiet revolution” in gay representation on network television, with found family at the heart of the show. Its Academy database record lists 18 Emmy wins and 96 nominations; those totals may change as the database is updated. Television Academy show record.

3. Pose (FX, 2018–2021)
Pose centers New York’s 1980s ball culture and the lives of Black and Latinx LGBTQ people, including trans characters and performers. Its significance is also behind the camera: the Television Academy highlights transgender writers, producers and directors among the creative team. Creator-executive producer Steven Canals put the need for that visibility plainly: “I yearned to see myself, my people, on television.” Television Academy Honors coverage.
4. The L Word (Showtime, 2004–2009)
Set among lesbian and bisexual women in West Hollywood, The L Word made queer women’s relationships and sexuality the engine of a serialized drama. The Television Academy’s Pride guide also points to queer women’s work behind the camera, an important part of the show’s contribution. Its specific focus gives it a distinct place alongside series built around gay male characters or broader ensembles. Television Academy Pride guide.

5. Queer Eye (Netflix reboot, 2018–)
The reboot reworked makeover television as a road-trip reality series: the Fab Five help people with their personal spaces and emotional and physical well-being. Its warm, practical format made queer expertise and personalities central without relying on scripted drama. The Television Academy database lists 12 Emmy wins and 41 nominations for the Netflix series; those are database totals, not a measure of cultural influence. Television Academy show record.
6. Glee (Fox, 2009–2015)
This musical comedy-drama followed high-school students and faculty, with queer and trans characters as part of its large ensemble. Songs and school-club storylines gave the show a different route into questions of identity and belonging than a single-issue drama would. Its range of characters and musical format make it a notable entry in a list that spans more than one genre. Television Academy Pride guide.

7. Six Feet Under (HBO, 2001–2005)
This family dramedy is built around the Fisher family’s funeral home, giving it a distinctive setting for stories about intimacy, loss and family life. The Television Academy’s Pride guide includes it among LGBTQ-relevant television landmarks. The available guide material does not detail the gay-character arc, so this ranking rests on its documented place in that guide rather than on a more specific character claim. Television Academy Pride guide.
8. Orange Is the New Black (Netflix, 2013–2019)
This prison dramedy is a strong fit for a queer-TV watchlist because it built an ensemble world in which queer women’s relationships and identities were part of the ongoing story rather than a brief subplot. Its mix of comedy and drama also broadened the range of settings and tones associated with serialized queer storytelling. The Television Academy guide’s broader selection of LGBTQ-focused series reflects the value of including different communities and formats in a canon, rather than treating gay male stories as the whole category. 9. Transparent (Amazon, 2014–2019)
Transparent brought a family dramedy’s intimate scale to trans identity and family relationships, adding a streaming-era title to a history otherwise shaped by broadcast and cable. Its place here reflects the value of making trans stories part of the broader queer television conversation, while recognizing that “gay” in the headline cannot describe every identity represented on this list.
10. It’s a Sin (Channel 4, 2021)
This British drama follows gay friends in London during the 1980s AIDS crisis, offering a historical counterpoint to the U.S. cable and network series higher on the list. Together, the final entries underscore that queer television includes historical drama and family storytelling as well as sitcoms, musicals and reality formats.

What makes these shows landmarks?
The strongest entries do not all make the same contribution. Queer as Folk pushed gay and lesbian friendship and sexuality to the foreground of a cable drama; Will & Grace made a gay lead central to a major network sitcom; Pose centered ball culture and LGBTQ people of color, with trans talent contributing behind the camera; and Queer Eye built a reality format around queer hosts’ expertise. Comparing them by genre, era and perspective is more useful than pretending they are interchangeable.
Representation counts help describe the broader TV landscape, but they are not quality rankings. In its 2024–2025 study, GLAAD counted 372 LGBTQ series regular and recurring characters across eight tracked streaming services. It also counted 35 of the 64 LGBTQ characters on cable at FX and HBO combined. These figures describe characters in a specific study year and platform scope; they do not count distinct shows or measure which series is best. GLAAD, Where We Are on TV 2024–2025.
One earlier figure has a different scope: GLAAD counted 71 LGBTQ regular and recurring characters on HBO Max in 2021–2022 and said most appeared in comedy. That historical platform count should not be read as a current streaming total. GLAAD, Where We Are on TV 2021–2022.
