TIME’s top video game of 2025 is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, followed by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yōtei. The ranking is TIME’s editorial list of favorites, not an industry-wide consensus. And while several entries have cinematic premises, none of the sources cited here confirms a film adaptation of any game on this list.
TIME’s 10 favorite video games of 2025
TIME published its ranking on December 6, 2025. Its order reflects the publication’s choices; the article does not disclose a scoring rubric or aggregation method. The list also includes Marvel Rivals, which launched in December 2024: TIME says the game needed a full year to show its potential, illustrating that a year-end favorites list need not include only games first released during that calendar year.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — TIME’s Game of the Year is a turn-based role-playing game from French independent studio Sandfall Interactive. Its Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world revolves around the Paintress, the Gommage, and questions of grief and morality. TIME lists PlayStation 5 among its platforms. (TIME’s ranking; TIME’s platform information)
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — Hideo Kojima’s sequel follows Sam as he works to reconnect Australia after the events of the first game. TIME emphasizes the story’s concerns with connection, purpose, and human bonds. (TIME)
- Ghost of Yōtei — Sucker Punch’s standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima follows Atsu on a revenge quest in Ezo in 1603. TIME highlights its samurai-film-inspired visual modes. (TIME)
- Split Fiction — Authors Zoe and Mio are pulled into their own fantasy and science-fiction story worlds in this cooperative adventure. Working together is central to making progress. Game Informer lists the game’s platforms and release dates alongside its discussion of the premise. (TIME; Game Informer)
- Silent Hill f — This standalone Silent Hill story is set in 1960s Japan. It centers on Hinako and a village overtaken by fog and frightening transformations; TIME calls attention to the Japanese setting and close-combat horror. (TIME)
- Hollow Knight: Silksong — Team Cherry’s sequel follows Hornet through Pharloom, expanding on the original’s 2D action-platforming and exploration. TIME describes it as broader and more difficult than Hollow Knight. (TIME)
- Lost Records: Bloom and Rage — Don’t Nod’s two-part narrative adventure moves between 1995 and 2022. Its branching dialogue explores friendship and memory alongside horror elements. (TIME)
- Doom: The Dark Ages — A medieval-set prequel in the Doom series, it pairs first-person shooting with new weapons and more emphasis on narrative and lore than earlier entries, according to TIME. (TIME)
- Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds — This Sonic kart racer changes courses during races and features transforming vehicles, customization, and characters from the franchise. TIME also notes additional downloadable characters and content. (TIME)
- Marvel Rivals — TIME describes a team-based multiplayer game built around a wide roster of Marvel characters. Though it launched in December 2024, TIME argues that it took a full year to show its potential. (TIME)
Why other “best games” lists may look different
A ranking, an award longlist, and a public vote answer different questions. Compare how each was selected, which releases qualified, what platforms or genres were included, and whether it measures editorial favorites, an industry membership’s choices, or reader popularity.
- GameSpot says its staff votes and discusses the results. Its eligibility allows some late-December releases from the preceding year and updated live-service games, so its boundaries differ from a strict calendar-year release list. (GameSpot’s method and eligibility)
- BAFTA’s 2026 Games Awards longlist is alphabetical rather than an ordinal top ten. BAFTA says more than 1,700 Games members selected 64 games from 255 considered, under a stated release-eligibility period. It is a membership-selected awards longlist, not a competing ranked list. (BAFTA’s longlist and process)
- PlayStation Blog’s 2025 awards drew nearly 1.5 million votes across 19 categories, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment. That is a public vote within PlayStation’s awards, not a measure of TIME’s selection or a cross-platform consensus. (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Could any of these games make a good movie?
That is a matter of adaptation potential, not confirmed production news: the sources cited here do not establish that any of TIME’s ten games has an announced film adaptation. Their story worlds offer different possibilities. Silent Hill f has a contained horror setting; Lost Records: Bloom and Rage moves between two periods and memory; and Split Fiction could support sharply contrasting fantasy and science-fiction worlds. Those are reasons to imagine an adaptation, not evidence that one is being made.

Game adaptations did have a visible 2025 moment, but the documented examples are separate titles. TIME reported that A Minecraft Movie had a worldwide box-office run of $957.9 million, and that Until Dawn had reported receipts of $54 million against a $15 million budget. These are figures reported by TIME, not a complete or independently reconciled box-office dataset. (TIME)
The Game Awards’ 2025 Best Adaptation page listed A Minecraft Movie, Devil May Cry, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, The Last of Us: Season 2, and Until Dawn; it marked The Last of Us: Season 2 as the winner. None is one of the ten games in TIME’s ranking. (The Game Awards)
