From Lelouch’s Zero Requiem to Spike Spiegel’s ambiguous finale, these anime endings put a protagonist’s death at the center of the story’s resolution.

Spoilers for the endings of all ten titles below. These picks focus on deaths at or near the end of the anime story—not temporary deaths that mainly serve as a plot device. They are ranked by how clearly the ending establishes the fate, how much it completes or changes the protagonist’s story, and the emotional or thematic payoff. One entry, Cowboy Bebop, is explicitly an ambiguous case rather than a confirmed on-screen death.

1. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 — Lelouch vi Britannia

Lelouch’s death is the culmination of the Zero Requiem, the plan he puts into motion to resolve the political conflict by turning the world’s hatred toward himself. It gives the series’ final power play a personal cost: Lelouch does not simply win or lose a contest for the throne; he makes his own death part of the political outcome. That tight connection between character, strategy, and resolution makes this the strongest fit on the list. Both BakaBuzz’s list and FandomWire’s list treat his death as central to the ending.

2. Death Note — Light Yagami

Light begins as the story’s central point of view and becomes the force the rest of the cast must stop. His death closes the conflict between his vision of justice and the people trying to expose and defeat him. The ending matters not only because the protagonist dies, but because the outcome decisively ends his attempt to control the world through the Death Note. Light also appears in both the BakaBuzz and FandomWire lists linked above.

3. Attack on Titan — Eren Yeager

Eren’s fate belongs to the anime’s conclusion, not to an earlier season’s turning point. The ending brings his transformation from a boy seeking freedom to a figure whose choices shape the fate of others to its final reckoning. His death makes the cost of that path part of the resolution, even as the story leaves questions about freedom, violence, and what follows unresolved. The cited BakaBuzz and FandomWire lists both include Eren among protagonist-ending examples.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

4. Devilman Crybaby — Akira Fudo

Akira’s death comes as part of the anime’s apocalyptic conclusion, where the collapse around him is inseparable from the story’s bleak view of humanity and violence. It is not a temporary setback that resets the plot; it is the endpoint of this adaptation’s tragedy. This entry refers specifically to Devilman Crybaby, not every version of Devilman. BakaBuzz includes Akira in its list of anime protagonists who die.

5. Banana Fish — Ash Lynx

Ash’s ending is painful partly because survival seems imaginable after everything he has endured. Instead, the anime closes his story with a death that gives the series’ violence and its brief possibility of escape a devastating final weight. A secondary account of the episode list reports that creator Akimi Yoshida had chosen this ending for the manga; the anime’s ending should be considered on its own terms rather than treating that reported interview wording as a direct quotation. The episode-list reference is the cited source for that report, and BakaBuzz also includes the series.

6. Akame ga Kill! — Tatsumi

Tatsumi’s anime ending is not interchangeable with the manga’s: the adaptation takes its own route through the finale. In the anime, his fate is part of a costly conclusion for the Night Raid conflict rather than a simple victory lap for the protagonist. Keep the distinction in mind if comparing versions. BakaBuzz and FandomWire both discuss Tatsumi’s anime ending.

7. Terror in Resonance — Nine

Terror in Resonance is built around more than one central character, so Nine is better described as one of its central characters than as its sole protagonist. His death is part of the anime’s final episode and completes a story shaped by the consequences of the boys’ actions. FandomWire’s list describes his death in episode 11.

8. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — David Martinez

David’s death is the aired ending of his story: the ambition and escalating costs of life as an edgerunner lead to a conclusion he cannot outrun. It is a character ending, not a claim that every story in the wider Cyberpunk setting ends with the same outcome. MyAnimeGuru includes the series in its list. A GamesRadar+ report on writer Bartosz Sztybor’s comments discusses unused, alternative ending ideas; those possibilities do not change what happens in the released anime.

9. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood — Jonathan Joestar

This entry is specifically about Jonathan’s story in Phantom Blood, not every protagonist in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Jonathan dies at the close of Part 1, giving his conflict with Dio a definitive ending while leaving the larger franchise free to follow other Joestars. FandomWire recounts his death as a protagonist-ending example.

10. Cowboy Bebop — Spike Spiegel (ambiguous)

Spike’s fate is the least definitive pick here. The finale strongly suggests a final outcome, and some lists describe it as his death, but the anime does not explicitly confirm that he is dead. FandomWire and MyAnimeGuru include the title in this category; under a strict confirmed-death rule, it is better treated as a borderline case than as a straightforward example. That ambiguity is part of the ending’s effect, but it means this ranking’s final entry does not meet the same evidentiary standard as the nine above.

What counts as a protagonist death?

“The main character dies” can mean different things in a long-running series, an ensemble story, or an adaptation that changes its source material. This list uses the death at the conclusion of the anime story being discussed as its baseline. A temporary death that chiefly launches the plot does not qualify; for example, Ranker’s criteria explicitly exclude Yusuke’s first-episode death in Yu Yu Hakusho as a plot device. When a title has multiple leads, name the character rather than implying the entire cast shares the same fate. And when an ending is ambiguous—as in Cowboy Bebop—say so instead of presenting an interpretation as confirmation.

The order is an editorial ranking, not a critical consensus or a measure of audience preference. It weighs how clearly the anime establishes the fate, how consequential it is to the character’s arc, and how effectively the ending delivers its emotional or thematic payoff. Crowd-voted lists use their own criteria; for example, Ranker’s page displayed 10.9K voters and 31.2K votes on its 2024 page update. Those figures describe participation on that list, not anime audiences as a whole.
