For a story that follows a killer, start with Death Note; for an investigation into a continuing threat, Monster is a stronger fit. This ranking weighs how central repeated killing is, whether the story follows the killer or the pursuit, the strength of its mystery or crime elements, and how directly each title answers the request. The order is an editorial recommendation, not an objective consensus. Some picks are crime thrillers or stories about serial assaults rather than conventional serial-murder mysteries, so each entry identifies its fit.
10 anime about serial killers and continuing murder investigations
1. Death Note — killer protagonist
Death Note is the clearest choice if you want the central character to be the killer rather than the detective. Light Yagami uses a notebook to kill people, while investigators pursue the figure known as Kira. That setup puts both the killer’s actions and the investigation at the center, making it the most direct match for this list’s two main kinds of viewer.
2. Monster — serial-killer investigation
Monster is a natural recommendation for viewers seeking a sustained pursuit and a dark mystery rather than a killer-led fantasy. It is frequently named alongside Death Note in recommendation discussions about anime involving serial killers. The discussions establish that viewers consider it relevant, but they do not establish a definitive ranking or, by themselves, support finer plot claims.
3. Psycho-Pass — broader crime thriller
The original Psycho-Pass TV anime began in 2012. Its official introduction describes a near-future society that quantifies and manages people’s mental states; police use Dominators to measure crime coefficients and pursue people classified as latent criminals. That makes it a strong fit if you want crime, policing, and the pursuit of dangerous suspects, but it is not exclusively a serial-killer story.

4. Paranoia Agent — psychological serial-assault mystery
Paranoia Agent follows the effects of attacks by a serial assailant across multiple characters as police investigate. Its psychological and social focus makes it a distinctive choice for viewers interested in how a series of attacks unsettles a community. The qualification matters: the available description identifies a serial assailant, not a conventional serial murderer, so the match depends on how broadly you interpret the topic.
5–10. Further picks require a narrower definition
A reliable ranked list needs more than a title’s association with crime or violence: it should establish whether repeated killing is central, whether the narrative follows the killer or the pursuit, and how substantial the mystery is. The available evidence here supports the four picks above but does not establish official premises and exact serial-killing connections for six additional anime. Rather than fill the remaining slots with guesses or imply a verified ranking, use the distinction below to choose the kind of story you want.

Choose by the kind of serial-killer story you want
- Killer’s perspective: Choose Death Note, the clearest killer-protagonist option among the supported picks.
- Investigation and pursuit: Choose Monster for a sustained mystery, or Psycho-Pass if a broader policing thriller also appeals.
- Psychological fallout: Choose Paranoia Agent if a serial-assault mystery and its social effects fit your interest, even though the available description does not call the assailant a serial murderer.
How this ranking is judged
The order favors directness first: a title ranks higher when repeated killing or the pursuit of a continuing killer is central, rather than merely part of a broader crime setting. It also considers whether the story gives viewers the killer’s perspective or a detective-led investigation, the strength of the mystery, and how closely the premise matches a request for serial-killer anime. These criteria explain the recommendations; they do not turn an editorial list into a measurable or canonical ranking.
