10 Backstage Stories About Harley Race—As Recalled by the People Who Knew Him

Harley Race’s reputation for toughness is only part of the picture. These ten stories—about his work, friendships, road life, and locker-room clashes—come from Race and from people who recalled knowing or working with him. The accounts are reported in a 2024 Pro Wrestling Stories roundup; they are attributed recollections, not independently verified incident reports.

1. Race began wrestling at 15—and focused on entertaining

In remarks reproduced by Pro Wrestling Stories, Race described how early he entered the business and what he thought his job was: “I started in this business when I was 15 years old. I was one of the most fortunate people on Earth to do exactly what I loved to do all my life.”

He also said: “My whole thing, in all the years I wrestled, was to entertain the people who had paid to see it, as much as my mind and body would allow me to do, to be as good as I could be at doing that. That’s what I tried to do my whole career.” The statements offer a view of Race in his own words, rather than through a story about a fight or a backstage confrontation.

2. Julie Hart said his handshake was something to avoid

Julie Hart recalled that people were wary of shaking Race’s hand because of his grip. As quoted in the roundup, she said: “Nobody likes to shake Harley’s hand because he’s got the strongest tendons ever known to anyone. He could break your hand with just his handshake. Everyone always shook his hand really gently and not the whole hand.”

Her description is an impression of Race’s physical intensity, not a measured claim about his strength. It also suggests that his intimidating reputation could register in an ordinary greeting, not just in a wrestling ring.

3. Julie Hart also remembered an icy winter drive

Hart recalled a winter trip with Race in dangerous icy conditions. The road story adds a quieter, more everyday kind of tension to the stories about him: the person beside you on a difficult drive was also someone whose strength and presence people remembered vividly. The roundup presents this as Hart’s recollection rather than a contemporaneous account.

4. Bob Backlund remembered a mentor, not just a rival

Bob Backlund described Race as both an exceptional performer and a source of guidance. “Harley Race was one of the best performers in the business, and I respected him a lot. He was a great mentor for me, and I learned a lot from him,” Backlund said in the quotation reproduced by Pro Wrestling Stories.

Backlund also recalled beating Race for the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship. Their later title-versus-title match ended in a draw, according to the roundup. The recollection captures a relationship that included competition and respect rather than reducing Race to his fearsome reputation.

5. Bret Hart said Race took him along on the road

In his autobiography, Bret Hart recalled Race taking him along while traveling. The roundup places this memory among accounts of Race’s relationships with younger wrestlers. It is a road story rather than a dramatic locker-room incident, and its value is in the glimpse it gives of Hart’s experience of Race away from the match itself.

6. Bret Hart’s book recounts a dressing-room encounter with Hulk Hogan

One of the roundup’s more dramatic stories comes from Hart’s autobiography, which recounts a dressing-room encounter involving Hulk Hogan and Race. Because the account reaches readers through Hart’s book as summarized by the roundup, it should be understood as Hart’s recollection—not as an independently established incident.

7. Hart also recalled an incident involving the Honky Tonk Man

Another story attributed to Hart concerns an incident with the Honky Tonk Man. The roundup groups it among memories of Race’s confrontational side. Its punch depends on the contrast between a carefully managed wrestling persona and the intensity people associated with Race, but the source remains Hart’s retrospective account.

8. An Owen Hart prank reportedly drew a forceful response

Hart’s autobiography also recounts a prank involving Owen Hart and Race’s retaliation. The episode is presented as a locker-room story, but it is still a memoir-based recollection passed along through the 2024 roundup. That provenance matters: a vivid anecdote is not the same as independent confirmation of each detail.

9. Tom Prichard recalled a disputed finish involving Don Slatton

Tom Prichard described a physically charged dispute over a title finish involving Don Slatton. The roundup presents Prichard’s account as retrospective and contested, not as neutral match documentation. Since the story concerns a disputed result and alleged physical confrontation, the careful way to read it is as Prichard’s version of events, not a settled account.

10. Eddie Sharkey recalled a dangerous Denver incident

Eddie Sharkey separately recalled a Denver incident involving Race and a crowd. The roundup’s account is graphic, and the claim rests on Sharkey’s recollection. It belongs among stories about the risks surrounding live wrestling, but it should not be repeated as though independently verified or as a representative account of Race’s entire career.

Where to read more about Race

For a fuller account of Race’s life and career, Sports Publishing’s page for King of the Ring: The Harley Race Story describes a paperback biography credited to Harley Race, Gerry Tritz, and Bret Hart. The publisher page lists the book as 208 pages, with a February 1, 2013 publication date and ISBN 9781613212110.

A different perspective appears in Ric Flair’s memoir, To Be the Man. Its publisher says the book includes anecdotes from Race among stories about several wrestling figures; it is Flair’s memoir, not a biography of Race. Gallery Books’ publisher page lists a 496-page trade paperback published May 16, 2015.

How to read these stories

The accounts range from Race’s own stated purpose as a performer to other people’s memories of mentorship, travel, pranks, and conflict. They do not all have the same evidentiary weight: the statements and incidents are reported through different tellers and sources, and the more sensational episodes rely on retrospective recollections. That distinction lets the stories illuminate Race’s reputation without treating every detail as proven fact.
