Goodbye, you.” Netflix released the preview on January 30, 2025, ahead of the series’ fifth and final season. The farewell is ominous promotional dialogue—not confirmation of how Joe’s story ends.
What does Joe say in the teaser?
In the teaser, Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg appears inside a plexiglass enclosure, looks directly at the camera and seems to be searching for a way out. His voiceover opens, “Hello, you. Haven’t we met?” and closes: “Let’s get to know each other better before we bid one last farewell. Goodbye, you.” ABC News reported Netflix’s teaser release on January 30, 2025. Does “goodbye” reveal the ending?
No. The line signals that this is the show’s last chapter and plays on the series’ direct address to the viewer, while the enclosure imagery adds a threatening edge. The teaser does not establish that Joe dies, is arrested or is saying goodbye to a particular person.
Netflix’s official premise is more specific about the setup than the outcome: Joe returns to New York to enjoy a “happily ever after,” until his past and dark desires threaten his life. That logline describes the season’s conflict, not its resolution. See Netflix’s official synopsis.

When did the final season arrive?
Netflix announced in March 2023 that Season 5 would be the series’ fifth and final season. The complete season, comprising ten episodes, became available on Netflix on April 24, 2025, according to Netflix Tudum’s season guide. Streaming availability can vary by region and date.
Why is Season 5 the final chapter?
In Netflix’s 2023 renewal announcement, co-creators Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter said they had “always conceived it as a five season journey.” The announcement also reported that Season 4 spent five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list and reached the Top 10 in 90 countries. Those are Netflix-published figures about Season 4, not independent audience measurements or results for the teaser. Read Netflix’s announcement.
The final season was led by co-showrunners and executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, after Sera Gamble stepped back from day-to-day showrunning. Netflix Tudum’s guide covers the season and its creative team.
What did Penn Badgley say about leaving Joe behind?
In a March 27, 2025 Netflix Tudum feature, Badgley reflected on finishing the role: “It’s bittersweet, as anything is. It’s probably a lot sweeter than it is bitter.” The comment is about the actor’s experience of leaving the part, rather than a clue to the character’s fate. Read the interview.

Where did the series come from?
You is based on Caroline Kepnes’s book series, which Netflix identifies as its source material. The novels offer a separate way to explore the story’s origins; the teaser itself does not say how the television adaptation’s final season resolves Joe’s arc. Netflix Tudum’s season guide identifies the books.
