The group lost to the reigning champions. Other singers who appeared on the show include Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, LeAnn Rimes, Aaliyah, Pitbull and Usher. Their results varied, and an early television appearance is not evidence that Star Search caused their later success.
Which famous singers appeared on Star Search?
Retrospectives from ABC News and TIME identify several performers who later became widely known in music. Some details are better documented than others, so the entries below distinguish a reported appearance from a documented performance or result.
Beyoncé with Girls Tyme
Beyoncé competed as part of Girls Tyme, a Houston group, rather than as a solo act. THIRTEEN PBS’s documentary footage identifies the young performers as Girls Tyme and shows them receiving three stars while the reigning champions kept their title. The documentary recounts that the group cried after losing. THIRTEEN PBS
Justin Timberlake
In a Fresh Air interview, Timberlake recalled losing in the first round as a child. On the trip home, his family saw an open-call audition for The New Mickey Mouse Club on television, and he went on to audition. His account describes one early appearance and an ensuing opportunity, not a career launched by Star Search. NPR Fresh Air

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the outcomes do—and do not—tell us
The appearances did not follow one pattern: Girls Tyme competed as a group and lost; Timberlake and Spears also lost; Rimes won her first round; and other accounts offer performance details without a comparable result. ABC News’s 2001 retrospective explicitly framed Spears and Timberlake among contestants who lost before becoming famous. These stories make for a striking look back, but they do not show that a particular result predicted later success.

Mathew Knowles later recalled asking host Ed McMahon what a parent should do after Girls Tyme lost. In the documentary, Knowles recounts McMahon’s advice that losing contestants might return, refocus and improve. That is Knowles’s recollection of the conversation, not a separately recorded statement from McMahon. THIRTEEN PBS
